I think all too often people miss judge what writers actually do. What does a writer do after all? Each writer has a different life they live. This is due to genre, style, topics, plot lines, audience, time, etc. A writer is a person who uses written words to communicate their ideas. Writers produce various forms of literary art and creative writing such as novels, short stories, poetry, plays, screenplays, and essays as well as various reports and news articles that may be of interest to the public. We survive only if the people around us like what we have to offer. Nothing we can control as it is all based on personal preference.
Personally, I am a novelist by trade, but that's not the only thing that I do. I'm a student, an athlete, a member of a family, and much more. Time for a college kid is something that is found in little amounts. The issue is that writing is not something you can time out how long it will take you to do, well writing creatively that is. It's not like math homework where you can do 50 questions in 20 minutes or science where there is a formula to get you where you want to go. There is no right or wrong answer for writing. We do not take tests in school; instead, we read our works aloud for all to hear and critique.
Writing is like learning a new language you must do it every single day. It is a natural talent but also something that can be learned. Writing has always been around it is the same idea as storytelling, humans love to tell stories and really that is what writing is down to its core. Poems tell some sort of message, as do songs, novels, short stories, nonfiction, etc. Some styles are more creative than others and more interesting to read.
Words are the key to our success the way we interact with people. Sometimes those who lack an understanding of the writing world just imagine writers sitting behind their computer screens typing away 24/7. It is possible for some people, but we need inspiration, like artists need a muse writers need that too. It's a place, a person, a feeling that gets us into the mood to write anything it doesn't happen all the time or for some writers it does, anyone can be a writer if they know how to properly use words.
I'm a writer; always have been and always will be. It's something I love to do, but it isn't the only thing I do. Being a writing major is not easy and it isn't spelled out for me. I have to figure it out on my own and write the best manuscripts for my portfolio. Writing takes time, and time is something you need to set aside to be a writer. Time for a college student is like money, never enough of either. As a writer, I must caution to be careful if you know writers you might just be characters in their stories.
