A Life Of Noise

It's so important to set aside time for moments of complete silence.

Usually I write my articles while listening to music. I feel like music inspires me and almost even helps me write faster. Tonight I decided to try something different. I am choosing to write in silence. I usually am talking to friends, texting or watching some Netflix in the background and never seem to think what an impact pure silence and zero distractions might have on my writing.

Although my writing style is the same, I've realized I can think more clearly. Imagine that. Something as simple as silence can completely open your mind to thoughts you didn't even know were there before.

If you think about it, we live in a world of noise and chaos. That isn't necessarily bad, but it can be a distraction in realizing how you yourself are really feeling. We are constantly enveloped with noises in some way or another. Every single day. It can be our alarm, our phone buzzing with texts, car horns, strangers' conversations and even the ambient noises of our environment. In the moment, it's hard to even think about the concept of silence. Being completely content with the quiet stillness you know you need, but unconsciously avoid. Why do we fear silence? Is it in our innate nature to avoid our thoughts? Is that the reason behind constantly going about our daily routines without a second of quiet time?

After starting my internship, traveling alone and even just writing this article I have learned that silence is the key to accessing your mind's full capability. I used to feel like silence was uncomfortable and awkward. All the times you'd be eating a meal with someone and have to have a hundred conversation starters on deck if for some unfortunate reason there is a moment of silence in between chewing. You should be content in silence with the ones whom you are truly most comfortable with.

I find my silence early in the morning or late at night. I purposely wake up early because the feeling of being awake before anyone else is refreshing. You have time to accomplish whatever it is you had in mind for the day without a single distraction in the way of achieving it.

You can learn so much about yourself by just letting go of the noise from the day and appreciating the silence. Creativity, curiosity and contentment are all devalued and forgotten because we get so accustomed to our lives of noise. Sometimes the noise keeps our mind and body from aligning.

I challenge all of you to try and put away whatever it is you're doing right now. Sit in silence with nothing but the sound of your breath in the background. Take however long you need, and yes, you should feel weird at first. You aren't used to letting yourself have this time alone. It is completely different than meditating or going for a run or hanging out with friends. There is a stillness about it. A moment in time when your thoughts are the only noise. Silence should be something we openly desire, not something we hide from.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
