Life Is Like A Jigsaw

"If you are not with someone, you are broken. If you are not with someone, you are incomplete. If you are not with someone, you are not whole." –Daniel Sloss

Life Is Like A Jigsaw

Remember when you were young and started to make a puzzle? You started from the corners and exterior, working towards the interior piece by piece. Sometimes that one section you worked hard to build fits in a different part of the puzzle. Maybe even once in a while, you would break the corner of a piece and need to spend time reconstructing that singular piece with some glue or tape – fixing something that will never look the same again.

After watching Daniel Sloss's comedy special "Jigsaw" on Netflix, I realized the importance of building puzzles as a child because, at the end of the day, life is simply your jigsaw puzzle. You start from the outside, hoping to create the foundation for an image where people accept you, respect you and feel comfortable entering into your life. This exterior was first created with the help of love and support from family and friends. However, as life goes on, this puzzle becomes more complex. Although you have more people supporting you, their help becomes less common – you can ask around but at the end of the day, you are the person who ultimately decides how you want your jigsaw to look.

The creation of your jigsaw generates questions. How will the finished puzzle look? Will I ever finish my jigsaw? Do I need somebody to help me complete my puzzle? Should I rebuild and start to create a new jigsaw from scratch? These questions are choices that affect the rest of your life. I emphasized "your" because, at this point in the jigsaw, people will search for that missing piece through the love of another individual – a common theme in life. You see those people every day who are never whole without a hand to hold, a ring on a finger or shoulder to cry on – a person to complete their jigsaw. While another individual may appear to fill the void, relationships cause people to lose parts of their jigsaw in return for love.

While this concept may seem morbid and overall confusing, Daniel Sloss' special dives deeper into the inner workings of the role that jigsaw's play in a person's life. I am not telling you this concept to advise you to contemplate your jigsaw but instead hope you take from this analogy what I have. Life is dynamic and ever-changing. Life is difficult, amazing and everything in between. Life is like a never-ending rollercoaster where you have the choice to enjoy the ride or be scared of the adventure. Sometimes what you receive in life is what you least expect and other times you are too busy anticipating life that you forget why you got on the rollercoaster to begin with.

Instead of anticipating and hoping for something to occur, go with the flow and let fate take over; however, remember to keep moving and don't let the journey pass over you. Fill your jigsaw with your experiences and passions. Fill your jigsaw with your hopes and dreams. Fill your jigsaw with you and only you. If you ever have the opportunity to find that missing piece, that one true love, that person who fits perfectly into your puzzle, realize that they may complete your jigsaw. Even so, make sure to never allow a person to change the jigsaw which you spent so much time, meticulously crafting to be unique to you. Without someone, your puzzle may appear broken, incomplete and not whole, yet you are still unbroken, complete and whole.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
