The Life of Being Adopted

There is a lot of stuff my friends, especially the ones in college, don’t know about me. Many can be obvious, or they can be hidden under the skin of who I am. So I’m writing this article to help you get to know me better. As the title explains I am adopted. I came from South Korea and I have been living here ever since. Here is what it's like to be adopted.

So I was adopted when I was 4 months old. When I came here, my parents made me a citizen of the United States right away. I was born on May 30, 1995 and I came here officially in October 1995. I have been living here ever since that day and I’m glad I am. Odds are I would be in the military if I was not adopted because in Korea when a male turns 18 they have to serve in the military, unless they opt for college.

I have grown with this part of my background as a great way to show who I am. However, it’s not as easy as I make it out to seem. I have been out of the country twice since coming here and neither were to Korea. However, with the current governments and tension with North Korea I think it’s best to not go for a while. However, that won’t stop me from going back to my home and seeing the city I spent around four months of my life.

With the concept of being adopted from a different country it is hard to not think of my biological parents. I have very little information on them and no pictures to give me a idea of what they look like. I don’t even know exactly where I was born either. Again, though I don't know much about my relatives, this won’t stop me from going back and finding them. When I was younger I never took into thought of who raised me for that short time. It wasn’t until I was in my sophomore year of high school that I wanted to make it a plan to go back.

I do plan on going back because I want to see and learn about the culture of my ancestors. Will it be a tough road? Of course but I’m willing to take it. I am willing to see what the country really looks like in person. I pray that I will be able to go back sometime within the future. Obviously I have it on my bucket list because that would make my life complete.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
