To honor my brother turning 27 last week, I thought I'd share with you 27 lessons he has learned in his 27 years of life.

My brother, Matt, is one of the most thoughtful, hilarious, and humble person I know. He never fails to make others laugh and have a good time. For anyone who wishes they had an older brother to learn from or wants to here some great life advice, take a look at what my brother has to share.

1. Treat others the way you'd want to be treated.

2. The world is full of lonely people just waiting to make the first move. 

3. Everyone has their own story; don't judge quickly. 

4. You can always make more money, but making memories is more important. Don't let money stop you from having fun. 

5. Family first.

6. Who cares what other people think about you. Be happy with who you are. 

7. You've got to experience failure if you want to achieve anything. 

8. Actions have consequences.

9. Whatever is supposed to happen will happen. You can't worry and try to control everything.

10. Meet people you thought you never would. They help to expand your perspective. 

11. Traveling = perspective

12. Be thankful for what you have. Some people have it worse than you. 

13. Change = tough but necessary 

14. Dogs > Cats 

15. Listening is better than talking. 

16. Sometimes little actions can have a huge consequence for others. 

17. There are certain times when you need to be selfish. 

18. Always get the aisle seat on a plane. 

19. The ability to talk and relate to people can sometimes be more important than being the smartest person in the room. 

20. High school can be rough; life gets a lot better. 

21. When you say you're going to do something you do it; stick to your word. 

22. Always dance at a wedding. No one likes the person that just sits there. 

23. Stay active. It's not as bad as you think it is to workout. 

24. True friends are hard to find, but the most valuable thing in the world. 

25. Never do things in moderations; always give it 100%. 

26. Learn from your bosses; whether good or bad there's something to learn. 

27. Forgive but don't forget.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
