I am proud to be a part of such a large and colorful community: the LGBT community or the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community. At one point we were all just gay, but follow me here. Then there was LGBT as stated above. Ahh the good ole' days. Presently, there is a ridiculous amount of letters that describe our queer community, but why? We just want equality like the next person, we just want to be considered human (and normal) like the next person, so why all of the labels? Why do gays have to have a label to be part of the queer community? It's ironic because we don't really want to be labeled, but we are the first to label ourselves.
Don't get me wrong I like being a distinct lesbian, I enjoy the individuality of who I am and now I am married! That used to just be something that was imagined, but not anymore. That is pretty cool. I like being a part of the queer community, I actually like the labels, but it's getting a bit ridiculous. As of 2016 the acronym for the queer community is LGBTQIA, next time won't you sing along?
LGBTQIA officially (unofficially) stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexual, Asexual. What the world? Doesn't that almost cover everyone in the world? If you don't think so, check this out: LGGBTQQIAAPPK! What. The. Hell? I'm not even sure where to go with this. I can tell you that I will never use this as a legit description of the community I belong to.
In an article written by Lyla Cicero, she says, "The categories of human sex and gender expression and identities they could represent is likely infinite. If that acronym looks a bit absurd, it speaks to the absurdity of thinking there are a few isolated “sexual minorities” while the rest of the human race is “normal” and fairly similar. The truth is the level of diversity in our sexual lives as human beings means we are all sexual minorities."
I agree with Cicero, aren't we all a part of sexual minorities? Don't we all explore our sexuality differently? Aren't we all open to different things or have preferences to what we like? I think for the time being I will be "labeling" myself queer because that is an awesome way to describe how I feel, but to each is own and now you have a letter in the "gay" acronym, so basically we are all gay in the eyes of the acronym alphabet.
