To The Undecided Incoming Freshman

You're the smartest one.

You’re undecided. You can’t think of something you want to do quite yet. You wish you did, though. All your friends have specific things they want to be nurse, physical therapist, teacher, and the list goes on. You wish you had an answer for when someone asks you, “What are you studying?” so you didn’t have to see the look of boredom on their face when you say, I’m not sure yet.

Well, let me tell you, you are the smartest one. You may be lost and trying to find something, but going in undecided gives you the freedom to try things. During your freshman year, you are going to grow so much mentally and academically. Without a set major, you have an openness to take any class that interests you. You’re not investing time in one set major and then decide later that you want to change and now you have these credits that you will never use. You are open to take whatever you want with no worries.

If you don’t know what you want to do, you’re fine. I am a junior and still am not entirely sure what I want to do when I graduate. You don’t need to be able to pinpoint exactly what you want to do, you just need to find where you fit and what you like. I took a communications class and soon found where I wanted to be with the people I wanted to be with. Just find where you feel at home.

Also, your freshman year should be the time that you get all of your general education courses out of the way, so this is a perfect time for you to do so while experiencing other classes as well. Your freshman year should be a transition period, you need to get used to college classes and there’s no better way than getting those gen eds out of the way.

Also, by taking multiple different classes you meet multiple different professors. By taking all these classes you get to know these professors and by knowing these professors you make connections and maybe your freshman year those connections don’t mean a whole lot to you, but when you’re a junior and senior and a professor knows someone to get you an interview or so, you’ll be thankful you made that connection.

College seems intimidating and scary and probably even more so because you don’t know what you want to do, but hear me out, I survived and you will, too. You will find what you want to do, it may take weeks, months, or a semester, but eventually you will find where best suits you and you will be so great at it.

It’s pretty crazy that at 17-18 you have to decide what you’re going to do for the rest of your life. It’s a huge decision, so don’t feel lost by taking a little bit more time to figure that out. So many other people go into college not knowing what they want to do, so remember you’re not alone and I’m living proof to tell you that you will find your major and you will survive.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
