A Letter to Mr. Donald Trump

Mr. Donald Trump,

As a Hispanic immigrant, who has come into this country and is living the American dream without killing, raping, or stealing, I find myself a bit disheveled by your comments made on June 16, 2015. Honestly, the entire thing was a bit of a SNAFU, but my favorite part was when you generalized all of Latin America into Mexico, because there's nothing that we as Hispanic people love more than being generalized into Mexicans. Now it's not to say that there isn't some truth to what you've said. Yes, there are criminals that cross the border, and they do add on to many issues in the United States, but that does give you an excuse to seemingly generalize. Immigration is definitely a problem in the United States, and that is undeniable, however ostracizing an entire community probably isn't the way to go.

Being a legal citizen of the United States, I recognize the harm that illegal immigrants can have on the country. No one can argue how unfair it is that while the rest of the country is taxed, and pays their dues, illegal immigrants go about without having to do the same. However, it's not as if every immigrant that has made their way into this side of the border is a complete threat and detriment to society. These are hardworking individuals who do nothing besides make a living for their families. Individuals who do the jobs that no one else in this country are willing to do because of the rigor that these jobs require for very little pay.

A hefty portion of the "illegal" community includes children. Children who didn't have the choice of coming to the United States, this was simply the card that they were dealt in life. They don't intend on raping, killing, nor stealing from anyone, they just intend on being successful because their families gave everything they had away so that they could succeed. You can't pin anything on these people.

The only way forward is progress through communication and collaboration, not deterioration and isolation. Remember Mr. Trump, like it or not, Latinos are the future of this country; might as well treat us right from the get go.

So Mr. Trump, I do ask you, how many of these "Mexicans" are true criminals? How many of us immigrants are purged from our countries because we are an evil to society? Or is it simply that us "Mexicans" come here to do the same as you have, which is succeed?

You'll need the luck many won't wish you next November.

Signed,

A concerned immigrant

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
