Dear Mr. Trump,
You have recently declared that you're running for president, which is cool a thing to add on to your résumé and all. Good for you. Over the years, you've made some remarks that have made my blood boil and my fists clench with anger, but nothing has gotten me more worked up than your your recent presidency speech, and your opinion on immigrants and immigration overall.
I quote you on what you said: "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best. They're not sending you, they're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems. [Mexican immigrants] are bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they're telling us what we're getting. I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall. It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably—probably—from the Middle East. But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening."
Now, let's stop there before I get more worked up than when I was when I originally heard your speech. Coming from a family where I am a first-generation American and my parents are from South America (Brasil to be exact), this left me in total shock. How dare you accuse all people from these regions of being cruel and negative people? My parents left behind family in hopes and prayers that they could give their daughters something that they couldn't have back home. My parents have worked so hard to get to the point of where they are today, especially my mother. She works six days a week to support a family of two full-time college students who are on the road to a bright future. She has given up so much to give us everything and more, just so that we can someday do the same for our children. Education is super important to her and she has done everything she can to supply us with the best, which has led my sister and I to be one of the first of our family to attend college. She is the type of woman who would drop what she is doing to help a complete stranger, which she has done countless times. She has supplied me with clothes on my back, food in my belly, and is even helping pay off my student loans while I am still a student. Everyone in town always tells me how blessed I am to have someone like my mother in my life and it's something I will never take for granted. She's my biggest blessing, and I always try to make her proud.
Would you call a hard-working mother like my own a drug-dealing rapist to her face? Would you consider her a threat to our country? A woman who has done nothing but achieve the American dream of watching her twin daughters graduate high school, and by 2017 walk the stage to receive their Bachelor's Degree? A woman who now is an American citizen, who cried while waving her small flag when announced she could fully have all the rights that I was born and blessed with?
You, Mr. Trump, no matter how successful and educated you may be, are in need of a truly educated lesson on the people from these countries. You really need to learn that not all people in voyage to our beautiful country are drug dealers, rapists, or terrorists. People like my mother who work hard and sacrifice everything to give their children what they dreamed of. People who grew up in rags and now are in riches surrounded by success and well educated children. You need to open your eyes, especially if your running for president in this culturally mixed nation, one that is one of the most diverse in the world.
Feel free to get in contact with me in any way you please, because I would love to have a serious conversation, coming from an open-minded first generation American college student. I would love to introduce you to my mother, who, in my opinion, deserves a genuine apology from you.
Sincerely,
Natalie Camargo
