Sometimes, I really hate you -- and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. You've had a reputation of giving girls and young women unrealistic expectations when it comes to having a beautiful body -- and you know what? It has to stop because it's not fair. You've always been around in some way or another, since the idea of what being beautiful is, existed.
In the 1800's, being beautiful meant being thin, and that's where the corsets came into play. Between that time and now, there have been so many concepts of "acceptable beauty" in our world, and it's ultimately crushing and ruining the self esteem of millions of innocent women who just want to feel like they belong in society -- like they're worthy of something.
You're here to knock them back down on the ground. If they're not the appropriate dress size, then they're automatically fat. If they have freckles, birth marks or any other kind of "non traditional" appearances on their bodies, then they're seen as average, as if that was a bad thing. Skinny girls are the prettiest girls in your eyes, and it's OK if a girl has to skip a meal in order to fit into those jeans or too look hot, and only pretty girls get boyfriends. I mean, that's what you advertise to us, right? I'm going to say, "Yes," for the most part.
Do you even feel the tiniest bit guilt for all of the pain and discouragement you've caused for all of the girls and young women in the world? That from day one, the message "this is beautiful" was ultimately shoved into the mind of a young girl the day she picked up a magazine when she was only eight years old? That from that moment on, she would have to find important people to remind her that you're a selfish, greedy liar?
You don't understand the pressures that they have to go through every day of their lives, and how hard it is to maintain the strength to remind themselves that they are gorgeous -- despite enduring all of the intimidating models in ad campaigns in magazines, on billboards, in movies and in music. When you feed these negative, toxic and incredibly shallow messages to these girls and young women, they take all of that information in and portray it back onto themselves. If a girl isn't a your definition of skinny, then her self-esteem is lowered. Who is going to be there to tell her that you're wrong and that she is actually a beautiful individual? You've already crushed her a little bit, and sometimes that's just enough to ruin someone's confidence or to at least put a dent in it. But I guess you don't care because you're all up on your high horse about making money and continuing to surround yourself with beautiful, rich, materialistic people. You're the kind of media that is evil and you're getting worse.
"Tan is gorgeous."
"Blue eyes is a must have."
"Don't eat that burger, you will hate yourself afterwards."
"Skinny tastes way better than that chocolate bar."
"Being physically beautiful is everything in life if you want to be happy."
"Who ever said 'bigger is beautiful' is feeding you lies."
Congratulations, Media. You're a main reason why girls and young women feel unworthy, depressed, alone or lack in confidence and self esteem. Thanks to you and all of your stupid and unrealistic versions of being beautiful and desirable is, you've crushed many across the world -- and it's sad because you probably don't even know the half of it because you're too busy creating new expectations for women that are even worse than the ones right now. Oh, and guess what? You may believe you and your ideas are gorgeous on the outside, but you are hideous on the inside -- the part that matters the most.
Sincerely,
The girl who knows she is beautiful, but often forgets because she's also a victim to Media's version of what is beautiful.
