A Letter To The Kid In Me

Hey you, how are you? I have missed your sweet smile and your charisma. I don't remember you much these days. I can only recall a few things about you that have me missing you. I miss your carefree spirit. I bet it is awesome not having a worry in the world. I miss how kids like you played with toys and not feelings. I miss how you live with no expense and no worry about what your next meal will be because mom and dad always made sure dinner was ready for you. I miss how you aspired to be a doctor as you always cared for your stuffed animal patients. I miss how great you were at cooking in your toy kitchen. I miss the life that lay in front of you, but you did not even know it yet. It has been years since I left you and it seems we have grown too far apart. I yearn to be in your place again, but this whole adulthood has got me thinking. I wish you knew some of the things I know now.

Here are 10 things I wish I could tell myself 10 years ago:

1. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is way too short to let short burdens burry deep within you. Stay carefree and remember that letting things go doesn’t make you weak, it shows your strength.

2. Be positive. There are so many people shining negative outlooks onto your life. Don’t let them. The light always shines brighter for those who smile and laugh more so tell a joke every now and then.

3. Love without limits. Fall in love with people because people and communication give life meaning. Your stuffed animals make for great friends, but interactions make for lifelong relationships.

4. Make life fun. Not everyday is the way you plan it, but that does not mean you can’t make it how you want it. Find fun in your life. Be the you that found excitement in making a new recipe in your toy kitchen.

5. Take risks. Do not be afraid to go above and beyond in life. Yes, sometimes it is scary, but never let your fears prevent you from living out your life. The thrill of the adventure comes from the risk you took to journey it.

6. Be kind. The world is full of spite and hate. Don’t let evils in. Portray kindness wherever you go because karma is real and good acts are always returned to the person they came from.

7. Do your homework. It may seem silly to add and subtract, but trust me when they say you will need these things for life they really mean it. The more you learn the more intelligent you will become and in life intelligence is the key to success.

8. Tell the truth. White lies do hurt. Be honest with yourself and with people around you because as life goes on you are going to want people to be honest with you right back.

9. Be healthy. Indulge in ice cream and crave your burger, but perform healthy acts in life because a healthy heart means a happier you. Go for longs runs or hikes.

10. Follow your dreams. People are going to shut your ideas down. If you want to do something in life, then do it. There is no one stopping you. When they say you can’t, prove to them you can and you will. Be the doctor all your stuffed animals loved.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
