A Letter To The General Public, From A General Cashier

A few words I would like to say to the general public.

Dear General Public,

So I am a cashier at a grocery store in my home town and I get the honor to work with the general public. Working with the general public is really hard but, it can also be nice.

Everyone who works with the general public I am sure would love to say a few things.

First, why come in to a store or anywhere and be disrespectful and rude? I have not done one thing to you except be nice and courteous. When I ask you how you are doing or if you found everything okay you should at least be nice and answer the question. I know everyone has bad days and sometimes just does not feel like talking but, come on don't take it out on random people.

Second, when you come into a public place you should act and dress like decent human being. Some of the sights I have seen working in a grocery store are astonishing. People come in high and drunk all the time and it is ridiculous. Not only that but, some people get mad. If something does not ring up the right price or we don't have something in stock, you would be so surprised at the way people act. The worst is if there credit card is declined, they will argue you down. Tell you that its your fault their card won't go through.

Third, customers kids. I am not a mother so I have no idea how it is raising kids but, I do know that I have had to parents who have raised me the right way. When I was little they would have never let me go into a store and act the way kids do now. Parents let them just run wild. They go and pull stuff off shelves, break things, and they let them scream and pitch fits. My parents would have punished me so much if I was to ever act like that. I understand it can be hard to tame your kids but, you cannot let them act like that in public.

Last but not least, government assisted programs. I am in no way about to dis government assisted programs. I realize some people are not as fortunate as others. However, when you come into the grocery and complain about the things you cannot get on your EBT card like wine, beer or tobacco products that is insane. Or when someone gets mad that they cannot get a different type of bread or milk, than what their WIC voucher says that is also insane.

So yes, working with the general public is a pain in the ass. But, there are days when someone so sweet and nice will come in and just make your day so much better. It is good to know that there are some nice people out in the world still.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
