A Letter To The Common White Girls

We are more than a sterotype

A Letter To The Common White Girls

When it all come’s down to it, girls are actually a lot more alike than we would like to think, or even admit. Girls take great pride in being individualistic with our own style, attitude, and personality, but thinking more about it, we are more alike than we realize. However, this is really not a bad thing. According to most people, we can be put into our own category, the basic white bitches, the common white girls, and the basic white girls. According to Urban Dictionary, we can be defined as any girl in America of any race, that is obsessed with any of the following: Leggings, Uggs, Hunter Boots, North Face Jackets, Vera Bradley, Makeup, Starbucks, Flavored Vodka, Sperry’s, Fall Weather, iPhone, MacBook’s, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Snapchat, Netflix, Mean Girls, and the Sorority Squat Shot, and the list goes on and on. In all honesty, I am guilty of being obsessed or slightly obsessed with a lot of the things that supposedly makes me known as a common white girl. However, I don’t think I should be degraded based on what I like and/or how I portray myself.

It is actually quite annoying how girls are negatively portrayed online and in everyday life, just because we might fit into some stupid category called the common white girls, or even the basic white bitches. The jokes have been around for a couple years, but being on a college campus, I realize how much more the common white girl jokes come out and it’s not always as funny as people think. However, I am willing to admit that I have shared my share of common white girl jokes. There is always a time and a place in which the jokes are funny but I feel as if everything I do is noted as something a common white girl would do. But so what?

I wear leggings because they are comfortable. I wear Uggs because they keep my feet warm. I wear Hunter Boots when it rains and even when it snows to keep my feet dry. I wear North Face Jackets to avoid freezing to death, I mean we do live in Michigan people. I use my Vera Bradley purse or backpack to keep my personal belongings by my side and to keep my books and laptop safe. I wear makeup to make myself feel beautiful, however, I do realize I don’t need makeup to look beautiful, which is why I don’t wear it everyday. I go to Starbucks to treat myself with a high calorie cake pop, or to buy a coffee to force myself to stay up late studying. I like flavored vodka because I can always get a different flavor...apple, peach, pineapple, watermelon, orange, and the list goes on and on. I wear Sperry’s because they go with any outfit I have on, and they’re pretty comfortable once you break them in. I love fall weather because it’s always the perfect temperature, and my fall clothes are more ravishing and more comfortable than my summer clothes. I go on my iPhone to text, call, and FaceTime my friends and family. I go on my MacBook to research, to write papers, and to keep up with my studies on Blackboard. I use Instagram to post pictures of my friends and I, and hell yes, I do post a selfie from time to time, because I am happy with myself. I use Twitter to voice my opinion or even joke around at times. I use Tumblr as a way to look at different photography and quotes. I use Snapchat to send funny pictures to my friends. I watch Netflix because I am hella obsessed with the Office, and of course at one point, One Tree Hill. I watch Mean Girls at least one a month because I can, and because my friends told me it was fetch. And of course, I am guilty of taking photos with my friends in the Sorority Squat Shot.

It’s actually absurd that I have to explain why us girls do what we do. We shouldn’t have to explain why we buy things or why we act in a certain way. What many people don’t realize is although there are days when we might fit the stupid basic white girl category that there are days when we are far from the stereotype. There are days when we wake up, throw our hair up in a bun, and proudly wear our sweats and hoodies. We workout and then eat four slices of pizza. We go outdoors, we hike, we fish, and we hunt. We donate our time to different organizations that we take great pride in. We don’t always gossip, we talk about real life problems such as politics, boyfriend problems, family problems, depression, and college. We don’t always buy name brand clothing; there are plenty of really great shopping days that were spent at Goodwill, The Salvation Army, and other thrift stores we find along the way. We aren’t afraid to have a beer with the guys, they even start to taste good after awhile. We aren’t conceited, as many people think we are, we spend time with our friends and family, and even volunteer when needed. So although many girls fall into the common white girl category, there is so much more to them as an individual than people realize.

So what if I’m known as a common white girl, I bring so much more to the table than the stupid stereotypical characteristics, just as I know so many more girls do.

People fail to realize that although we might look and dress the same, we aren’t the same person. We all have our own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, interests, passions, and desires. We all love and hate different things. I don’t care if I am known as a common white girl, because I know there is more to me than the average stereotype. However, I’ll continue to walk around campus wearing my leggings, hunter boots, north face jacket, with my makeup done, and my hair in my messy bun, but I will also be the first to hold the door open for someone, to help someone when they are confused in class, and to be a friend when someone is in need of one.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
