A Letter To The Friend Who Doesn't Give A Firetruck

To My BAMF,

You're one of those people who always says, "Who cares?" and "Let's ______ just to see what happens, it'll be hilarious"! You're one of those people who always speaks their mind without fear of scrutiny from others because your strength, arsenal of amazing comebacks, and sass (among other things) are bigger than your fears.

I mean, everyone's human and we all have days where we're insecure and a little timid but it seems like those days are few and far between to you. You're as fantabulous as Beyoncé in all of Lemonade. Don't. Ever. Forget. It.

You're definitely not the person who sweats the small stuff, even though you might on occasion. Whether it's class assignments to drama among the social circle, you're doing your own thing. Not like a lone wolf, but you rise above and always encourage people to do the same. Being the bigger person, but not letting it get to your head. Being optimistic when the rain clouds roll in, and everyone seems to be down and out. Being calm, cool, and collected when stress comes your way. But that doesn't mean you don't like to poke the bear and show off your trademark sass and wit during times when people are taking things too seriously, need a laugh, or to get over the stupid ex-S/O you want to hit repeatedly with a brick for being a super-jerk. You embody comedic relief.

You work so hard and are so passionate about the opportunities, people, and experiences that exist in your life, never taking a second of it for granted, and always taking the time to show the people you love and care about how much you cherish having them in your life. You prioritize and dictate what and whom you surround yourself with, but you're not one to let differences between a friend separate you from being there for people whether you like them or not. I probably see you every day, or not so much. I may be returning to my place as your partner in crime, but you always pick up where we left off and I love that. You've got a big heart but also a bigger, brighter sparkle in your eye and smile when you say, "Firetruck it! Let's go on an adventure," and cause some good old-fashioned trouble. Whether it's faking an emergency to get out of class to get food together, showing up to a party in our crummy clothes, or parking on the grass because "Firetruck it." We're having a blast, as usual.

Although they might be the same, not giving a shiitake mushroom and not giving a firetruck are two different things in my mind. Not giving a crap isn't good since you need to give some crap in order to be able to function as a human being and contributing member of society, whether or not you want to. Not giving a firetruck, however, embodies all I've said above; conducting the humor/sass/debauchery train, not sweating the small stuff, being positive and fearless against all odds, and most of all... cherishing it all, lessons & blessings.

I just wanted to remind you how amazing and fantabulous you are, hope you never forget it, and to always give some crap. But, God forbid, never give a single red firetruck.

Much Love,

Your Partner In Crime

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
