Letter To New Members
Dima Alkharouf

Dear new members of my beloved sorority,

What a beautiful moment it was to see you run home to our letters. I won't lie -- I think I shed a tear or two. I was reminded of how just a year earlier I was running home as well. I was reminded of all the memories I've made since then and the amazing friendships I've made starting from my own bid day. From here on out, you are always guaranteed a home away from home, no matter how far away you live. You are always guaranteed a family when yours cannot be near. You are guaranteed love, when you feel like it's the farthest away.

This journey may not always be the easiest -- just a warning. You may find yourself, at times, disappointed. But as a new member, this should give you the willingness and determination to fix whatever is broken as you rise up in the chapter. You, my love, are the future of our beloved chapter. We wanted you from the beginning and now it's your time to shine and show us what you can do.

This new member period may seem like it will last forever and that initiation is thousands of years away. However, this time is so special in your journey in the chapter. Take this time to familiarize yourself with our history, our standards, our sisters, and those that you have pledged with. The girls in your pledge class will be with you your entire time in our chapter and will experience the best and the worst times with you. You never know -- you may find your soul mate, your person, your bridesmaid, and your best friend. I know I did.

You have so much to be excited, for big/little week is just around the corner, mixers with other chapters on campus, celebrations of sisterhood, and campus events that will become memories of a life time. When looking for your big, look for someone you could consider your mentor. This will not always be your best friend or your party partner. It will be the person that will tell you the hardest things; it will be the person you can call when you've had the worst week, day, or night. As sisters, we're looking for you, our future little. The one that we will love to pieces, the one we will spoil, the one we will guide, and the one that we will cherish for a life time. As a warning, I'm telling you that we will not always be perfect. We will mess up along the way. But what I can promise, is that our love will cover you for all of time. Get excited, because I'm already head over heels for you and have too many crafts waiting for you.

This sorority, I hope, will become so dear to you in this time. When you finally get initiated you will know the pride we wear with our letters goes far beyond the wait. You will always wear them, whether you're physically wearing them or not. Take our history seriously; this is what separates us from every chapter. Learn our rituals and hold them dear to your heart; these are the secrets that will hold us together the years you are in this chapter and after.

Finally, love every sister you meet. Although you may not click with each of them, you are bonded together by our sisterhood, and no one but us can say that. I hope you know you are so special to us. We look at you and smile because we know you are the future of our beloved chapter and sorority. Love in -- well, you know.

XOXO,

A sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
