Seniors,

You’ve made it to the last year of required schooling. Now you’re ready to graduate and enter the real world, the moment you’ve been waiting for. But think about it, are you really ready for what’s to come? Some of you are 18 or will be soon, and yes technically you are an adult, but honestly are you really ready for that responsibility? Do you have a job to support yourself? Will you be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your goals in life?

I look back at my senior year and remember thinking I had it all figured out. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do and exactly where I wanted to go to school. Boy was I wrong!

I was 18 and ready to graduate so I could be out on my own. I thought that college would be easy and fun, and I was so excited. Wow, did I have a reality check.

Piece of advice one: If you plan on going to college, figure it out now. Apply to several schools even if they’re not your top choice. You should always have a backup plan! Apply for any scholarship that you qualify for because you can never have too many scholarships! College is expensive!

Two: understand that circumstances change. I planned on going to one school for all four years, but I have attended three schools and will not graduate in four years because life changed my plans. Also, understand that just because life changes your plans, it does not mean that your plans do not matter. Do not give up on your goals. You just have to make adjustments in life and find another way to accomplish your goals.

Three: enjoy that last year of school. Entering the real world is not as much fun as you would think. Make long lasting memories with your high school friends because your plans may not be the same. Your paths may take you in different directions. Most of you will end up losing touch.

Enjoy this time with your family as well. You do not realize how much their company means to you until it’s not there. Even though you are surrounded by your peers you will find yourself missing your family.

So to my graduating seniors: plan ahead, enjoy your last year, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Sincerely,

A High School Graduate

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
