“The real world” – the scary, after-college world which is so far off as a freshman that it almost seems like a myth, but now that we have reached our fourth year of school, is all too real and intimidating.
Yes, we must all move on into the world at some point, but for us seniors that intend to graduate in the spring, the reality of our quickly approaching adulthood is almost too much to handle. A lucky few have gotten jobs lined up for after graduation, and know where to live and with whom. But the vast majority of us grads have NO idea where we will end up or what kind of job we will attain, and this is a very terrifying feeling. This is something we as individuals have never experienced. In our lives previously, there was always something coming up in our future; middle school, high school, college. During this time frame, we always knew what we would be doing every day, what our plans were for after school, and the home we would be returning to at the end of the day. Now, we try to imagine our future after college and see nothing: everything is uncertain and unknown.
As scary and hopeless as this fate may seem, it does not have to be something we fear. We can accomplish anything we set our minds to. And it’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do after graduation. You have the freedom as a young adult to try a myriad of jobs to see which one is the best fit for you, and this job doesn’t need to be in the same field you received a major in! The awesome part about getting a degree is that most major companies/corporations will accept your job application, regardless of whether or not you have studied the field in the job you are applying for.The fact that you have a college degree is more than enough to prove that you can do the job they require.
So instead of being afraid of your unknown future, embrace it!! Everything will work out how it is supposed to in the end.You just have to have faith in your degree and in yourself, and know that the adult world isn’t as scary as it seems now.Just enjoy your last year of college for now, and if opportunities arise for jobs after school, take them! If you don’t end up liking that job, quit and apply for something new! You have your whole life ahead of you to figure everything out.So relax, trust yourself, and have a great senior year!! You deserve it.
