A Letter To Brock Turner
NBC News

First, I would like to say that I'm tired of seeing your mechanical smile every time I open Facebook. I'm tired of you being a national "debate" because there is absolutely no debate about it. You are a rapist and you deserve to be dealt with accordingly. However, this letter is not going to discuss any of the topics you're used to seeing. I'm not going to mention that night, I'm not going to mention my personal opinions on how long you should spend in jail, I'm not going to discuss any of the statements you or your father or your attorney have released, and I am sure as heck not going to mention any of your academic or athletic achievements.

I'm going to discuss your character, because you, Brock Turner, are a disgrace to men everywhere.

You are a disgrace to the boys who make sure intoxicated girls get back to their dorm safely and then leave them there (regardless of their personal blood alcohol content). You are a disgrace to the boys who invite girls to coffee simply because they want to pick their brain instead of take of their clothing. You are a disgrace to the boys who behave respectfully towards women. You are a disgrace to boys who have been taught to behave the normal way towards other human beings.

You are a disgrace because you perpetuate unfair stereotypes. Stereotypes such as, women need to be careful when they go to a party for a girls night or women need to keep their guard up at all times. Stereotypes that men should be feared, that all men want from women is sex, and that men can and will use their physical force against women.

You're also the most selfish young man I have ever encountered. You believe that you are too privileged to ask for consent, too privileged to own up to your own mistakes, and too privileged to be punished. And somewhere in that pea sized brain of yours, you believe that this situation solely affects you.

I feel sorry for the men out their who fall in love with beautiful women like your victim. Men who would do absolutely anything to make her smile. Yet she has a hard time trusting men because of you and other scum like you. I feel sorry for the walls that are shielding these women from the hurt that you have convinced them they deserve. I feel sorry for the family members who have to watch their loved ones break and the children that are being raised in fear of men like you.

So forgive me if I have a hard time feeling sympathy for the fact that you will never compete in the Olympics. You owe more than your victim an apology.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
