A Letter To 2017 Me
Caroline Buck

Dear 2017 Self,

As does every year, 2016 has had its ups and downs. Of course, how can all 365 days in a year be absolutely perfect? There were things that couldn't be reversed: deaths of loved ones, natural disasters and simple things like not doing well on tests. Of course, there are ways to move on and build upon these occurrences. My main focus for you, though, 2017 self, is on the things -- and habits -- that CAN be reversed: falling-outs, unnecessary spending of money, organizational struggles, lack of patience, unhealthy routines, jealousy and focusing on yourself more than on others. I don't expect myself to be a human without mistakes. After all, if we don't make mistakes, how would we learn to become better people? I want to strive to be the best that I can be and make sure that my purpose on Earth shines at a young age.

As the new year begins, I wish fir you to focus on happiness through relationships and non-materialistic ways. Money buys only temporary happiness, but healthy relationships, habits and adventure will grant eternal happiness. Just looking back on memories, picturing singing songs with friends or taking a stroll at sunset with your boyfriend brings back more authentic joy than picturing buying a new, cute sweater. Of course, it is OK to treat yourself every once in a while to a new shirt or a yummy dinner, but remember it's the memories you make WHILE wearing that new shirt or the conversation you have WHILE eating that yummy dinner that counts the most.

It's your time in life to have fun and to enjoy friends' company, but it is more than that: it is your time to set yourself up for the future. I made very good grades this semester, and I strive to continue to do so. What people don't normally say school does for you, though, is build character. Something as simple as volunteering to feed the homeless or tutoring a friend can motivate anyone to continue to spread kindness to others in many different ways. It is true that this built kindness toward others can become a tool for self-success. You need to organize and balance life to promote success and happiness for others and yourself. You need to make a typical Monday look like this: go to class, do homework, rehearse/practice, grab food with a friend that hasn't been seen in a while and sleep. Then, make a typical Saturday look like this: sleep in a bit, do homework, clean, volunteer somewhere, go out with friends.

Make 2017 a year of positive change, and when the negative hits, find a way to learn from it and continue to strive for greatness.

Sincerely,

2016 Self

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Being Invisible The Best Super Power

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
