A Letter To My 16-Year-Old Self
Mackenzie Cannon

Mackenzie,

You are getting ready to go back to school after your short Thanksgiving break. You and your on-and-off again boyfriend have just gotten back together. You are still feeling uneasy about this, but you're feeling like you don't have much of a choice. Your junior year has been your most difficult one yet. You've lost friends who you considered to be family and you are drowning in school work. You currently feel like your life is turning to shit. I'm here to promise you and all the other 16-year-old girls that it is not.

Things may be difficult right now or they may be really easy. Either way, things are subject to change; your life is subject to change. You may believe that your current best friend will be in your life forever or that you and your boyfriend are going to have a fairytale wedding. You aren't. Well, you most likely won't. Sixteen is a weird age. Sometimes, you feel like you're still that innocent little girl. Other times, you feel like a full-fledged adult. It's an icky time. Your emotions run deeper than you ever imagined possible. It's scary because you never realized how much emotion you actually had until now. You're growing. Whether you like it or not, you're making that transition from teenager to a young woman. It's awkward and weird but it's happening and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Now that I've stated the harsh truth, it's time to soften it up a bit. Things may be moving at a ridiculous speed, but slow down and enjoy what you have. I know you're sooo excited to go to college, but soak up the small town that you're surrounded by. Once you leave, it won't always be the same. Spend time with your childhood friends, because two years from now they may not be there to hear you mutter "I love you." Go to the grocery store with your parents and all those little hole-in-the-wall restaurants that no one else knows about. Sooner or later, home won't be so homey anymore, so take it all in. Do not rush growing up because once you do, you can't go back. It's the little things that you looked over that you'll miss the most.

Finally, you may feel like you're making every mistake you could possibly make. The truth is, you probably are. What you need to hear is that it's okay. You are supposed to be making these mistakes because they will only help you grow. So screw up, kiss a few frogs, and enjoy being a kid. You will never get the chance to be 16 again.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
