A Letter To High School Seniors

Stop counting down the hours, minutes and seconds.

A Letter To High School Seniors

Dear Seniors,

Stop counting. Graduation will come soon enough. Stop counting. Stop watching the days pass. With only two months left, I know it’s hard. You’re ready to be finished. I know that feeling, believe me. I’ve been there. One year ago, I was in your shoes. I was sitting listlessly in class wondering why I bothered to show up to school anymore. I knew I was going to graduate, and it seemed like a waste of time to go to class.

I was wrong. It’s not a waste of time. Stop spending your last days waiting for the year to be over and enjoy the time you have left. Celebrate. Savor every second of your senior trip, the last few spring sporting events, the graduation practice and even your final tests. Trust me, finals will never be this easy again. Ever.

Hug your parents and siblings, pet your dog and cuddle your cat. Stand in your own shower and enjoy the fact that you don’t have to wear shower shoes.

Have sleepovers with your friends. Eat breakfast at midnight. Giggle about boys and be carefree.

Stop worrying about college, your dorm, roommate and the scholarships or financial aid you may or may not get. Everything will fall into place.

Appreciate that you don’t have to use a public laundry facility—and that you’re not paying for your laundry soap or dryer sheets.

Soon, graduation day will be her. All the things you looked forward to, prom, senior trip, sports banquets and graduation day, will be memories. Soon you will leave for college, and miss everything you took for granted like your family, a home cooked meal and a bedroom bigger than a closet. Don’t take this time, the precious few months before graduation and the start of college, for granted.

Be present. Appreciate the people around you who want to celebrate your accomplishments. Believe it or not, graduating high school is an accomplishment. It is a milestone, and it should be celebrated like any other milestone. I brushed the day off, and didn’t treat it as importantly as I should have. I wish I hadn’t.

Above all, allow yourself to be happy. These next few months will be a whirlwind of stress, boredom and excitement. Let yourself experience everything that go along with graduation, but don’t get so wrapped up that you forget the most important thing of all: to be happy.

I wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors.

Yours,

Future You

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
