A Letter To People Who Think They're Better Than Others

Thinking you're better than someone because "your major is harder" means you're a dummy.

I've been back in school for exactly five days since my year-long experience as a Professional Intern, and while I'm sure this has been around for much longer than I've realized, I've noticed that there's a stigma around people enrolled in majors that are historically difficult where they believe that because they're in a historically difficult major, that they're suddenly superior to everyone else. Things that I've heard over the past five days include gold such as "Oh, he's just a business major.", and "I wish I had as much free time as a(n) [insert focus of study] major." (I've heard it with "business", "art", "archaeology", and "biology").

This idea of being superior because of some preconceived notion that people don't work as hard as others in school is appalling. There is no such thing as an easy major in college; simple as that. The concept of higher education was founded on the premise of challenging excelled students and expanding their scope of knowledge by means of rigorous curriculum, and to attempt to invalidate someone's education because they feel he/she isn't being challenged equally is asinine.

The pursuit of higher education is all about passion. Attempting to reduce it to something as systematic as difficulty is an entirely incorrect view. Statistically, people are better at something they find interest in, while struggling with tasks and topics they have no interest in; so if someone looks like they're actually enjoying college, it's probably because they enjoy their field of study and didn't choose their major based solely on a reputation of difficulty or the average income of graduates. Someone's major doesn't reflect on their personality, and to judge them based on it is a narrow-minded take on reality. Life is all about doing what you love and following your dreams and doing what makes you happy. As my mom always says: "You do you Scotty P." - We're the Millers.

This one goes out to all the engineering majors that inspired me to write this rant: If you have a similar need to invalidate people solely because of their passion to learn about a different topic of education from you, then please transfer to a different major, university, or plane of existence. The rest of us don't have time to put up with your intolerance or the negative reputation you're thrusting onto us. You're making us all look bad.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
