An Open Letter To My Older Sister
Erin Smith

Hi! I think that it is time that we had a talk. It's nothing bad, I promise.

You are my sister and I couldn't love you more than I already do. You have taken care of me since I was a little kid. You and Gordo taught me to ride my bike without training wheels, you put band-aids on my knees, and you helped me learn to braid my hair. You have been the one constant person in my life that I have looked up to. Anyway, we have a lot to talk about.

When we first moved to a new town we only had a two bedroom apartment and we had to share the second bedroom, you could say that we got really close that summer. I was attached to your hip because we didn't know anyone, we couldn't really go anywhere so we just kind of chilled in the apartment. It was kind of a sad summer, but I know that it would have been a much worse summer if I was by myself, so thank you for making it less of a sucky summer.

Before we moved here to Muncie, mom and dad moved here first to get an apartment and we were still in Peru to finish the school year so we didn't have to start at the end of the year at a new school. You stepped up and kind of became my second mom, you made sure my homework was done, you made sure I got to school on time, and you always made sure that I made it to gymnastics on time. You went to every meet that you could, and you were 100% supportive of everything that I did. You grew up a lot faster than the normal teenager had to, I don't think that I can every thank you enough for that. You played a big part in who I am today, so thank you.

So here we are today, best friends and I wouldn't have it any other way. You're getting married in a year and I get to be your maid of honor, can you believe that?! You're getting married to your other best friend, but lets be honest here, I'm your favorite. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate one of the happiest day of your life than standing up next to you on your most special day. I wish nothing but the best to you, you of all people deserve it.

I know that our family can be a little hard to please. I mean four aunts and our grandmother have been a huge part of our lives since the day that we were born, and being the only nieces and granddaughters didn't really help either, I mean we basically grew up with six mothers including our actual mom. They love us and only want the best for us, keep that in mind as you continue through life, but also go your own way. It is your life to live after all. The only life you have to live is the one that you are living. So do whatever makes you happy. And I know for a fact that your fiance makes you happier than I have ever seen you, and I've been around you my entire life. Begin this next chapter of your life with as much happiness as you possibly can, if you don't you could come to resent it. You can't please everyone, the only person that you have to please is yourself.

You have been there for me since before I can remember, form the good times playing house upstairs and letting me be the mom for once, to the bad times when your tried to sell me at a garage sale. Now its time for me to be there for you. Your my big sister and I wouldn't want to trade you for the world. Go and love, be happy, and enjoy the next steps in your life. You deserve it and the world.

I love you to the moon and back.

-Kate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
