A Letter To The Newest Inhabitant Of My Dorm

This room is amazing. I promise.

To the newest inhabitant of Pillsbury 213:

Congratulations. You've just scored the best room on campus at Stephens. Sure, the blinds don't work, the furnace creaks – a lot – the air conditioner smells like mildew, and there are paint marks on the floor (don't ask how they got there, they've been there forever), but this dorm is a magical place full of memories, time spent with friends, countless hours of studying and late-night food runs. The acoustics are amazing for blasting music, playing a musical instrument or for belting along to "Let it Go" at 3 a.m. (no judgment, either way). I've stayed in this dorm since I first arrived at Stephens. There have been incredible triumphs in this room, and some bitter losses, but still, these are the memories that make up this room.

I am going to save you a lot of time and let you know that the bed looks best under the south-facing window. Facilities likes to move it to the corner by the north wall. Don't let them. If you have a cat, the closets are a fantastic place to store its litter box. The toilet is in close access if you ever have too much fun on the weekend, but you should never, ever flush food down the toilet, it will clog the piping and you'll have problems with your shower. The fan is the fastest way to cool the room down in the mid-Missouri heat (it's also a lot quieter than the air conditioner).

You don't have to follow my guidance. Feel free to move your bed anywhere you want to. Build your own room design. Paint the walls if you want to. (But seriously, no matter what you do, NEVER flush food down the toilet.)

Maybe you're a freshman, embarking on your college journey. Maybe you've been on campus for a while. Maybe you're a senior, like me. Maybe we already know each other. Regardless, I am so delighted to welcome you to the sisterhood of Pillsbury 213. Please treat the room well, and remember all of the Stephens women who've lived there before you – the building is from the early 1930s, so you know there have been a lot of them.

I've made a lot of great memories in that room. I hope you are able to fill the room with your own.

Best of luck,

The former tenant of Pillsbury 213.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
