A Letter To The Little Sister I Never Had

And the advice I'd give to her

A Letter To The Little Sister I Never Had
Adrienne Fish

There's so much to say and so much advice I want to give you, and although it seems like we have all the time in the world, you keep getting older and I'm running out of time to teach you things.

It's also hard knowing I can't teach you everything, and that you're going to have to learn things on your own. But I'll always be right behind you; waiting with a tub of ice cream for every heartbreak and a helping hand whenever you're having troubles getting back up again.

I guess the first thing I want you to know is that time isn't slowing down anytime soon, so you've gotta make the most of every second you have. I hope you never regret anything in your life. And why should you? If you wanted it in the moment, don't regret that later.

Get back up. There are going to be days that hurt to even move (literally and figuratively), but you have to keep going. No pain will last forever, I promise you that much. Cry if it reduces your heartache, then I'll help you wipe your tears, pick yourself up, face the world. Life goes on with or without you, don't let it move without you.

If you want to eat the doughnut, eat the doughnut. It's hard being a dancer, and you might come to a point in your life where you're seriously not happy with yourself. But sometimes you just have to realize you're beautiful in your own skin, because it's yours. And I'm always here to tell you that as many times as you need to hear it.

At some point, you'll be holding onto something and afraid to let it go. This has happened to me a couple hundred times in my life so far. Despite the fact that I'm basically trying to water a dead flower, I still hold on. Don't water dead flowers, they won't be coming back to life.

That being said, if it's worth fighting for, fight ferociously. Just be choosy about what you fight for.

Never lose your sunshine. This may be my favorite thing about you. You're the coolest. You make every day a sunny one, even when it's storming out. Your positive outlook on life is awesome and I don't want you to ever lose that. Your sunshine as it is now can withstand thunderstorms and hurricanes- don't lose that power. You'll need it later in life.

You'll have to let go of something you thought should happen, and live in what is currently happening. There are going to be days when you wish you were numb. When you'll want to rip your heart out of your body and find something easier to take its place. Collect those days like the bricks you wanted to shove into your chest - and marvel at the buildings you could make from those. Stand on top of the beauty you create and stand there, chest open, head up. Nobody will ever see the world like you do.

You're cool. Don't forget that.

It's okay to date boys, but don't ever place your happiness in them. 'Cause chances are, they're not gonna stay around for a long time, and then you're not going to have any happiness left. Keep your joy close to your heart - guard it with everything you have. It's yours and yours alone.

If you're going to wear red lipstick - you've gotta own it. Wear that lipstick like you're Marilyn Monroe about to book a modeling job JUST BECAUSE you're wearing the lipstick and you look fabulous. Because you do look fabulous.

The best revenge of all is happiness. Whoever is out there trying to knock you down isn't gonna be happy when they see you killin' the game. So, smile, no matter how much it hurts you. Nothing drives people crazier than seeing the people they don't like having a great life.

Carry your weight. No one likes a slacker, especially in group projects - that's the worst.

Just so you know, I'm pretty sure men are effectively idiots until the age of 25. So keep that in mind.

Don't take sex lightly. I mean it.

Take hot baths.

Listen to classical music occasionally.

You are more than capable, I promise.

Don't smile if you don't mean it.

Have heart to hearts with your friends.

Travel.

And perhaps, the most important thing of all: I am always, always listening. I'm always here for you and I get excited when you need help. Don't be afraid to come to me with anything.

I'm so excited for this roller coaster of life you're on, it's going to be a good one. So buckle up, and get ready for it.

I love you. Infinity times infinity.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
