A Letter To My Best Friend's Roommate

Honestly, I am already jealous.

To my best friend’s roommate:

First of all, I am jealous of you to begin with. My best friend and I went separate ways, and now you get to live with the best person ever. I will know if you mistreat them because I will hear all about it, trust me. We have had an amazing summer, amazing memories, and an amazing friendship. I did not have too many friends, but the ones I did have were extremely close. They were there when I needed them and I was there when they needed me. We kept homeostasis in each other's lives like no other.

But now, they won’t need me. I won’t be able to provide the same help that I used to. Now that we are 394 miles apart, I cannot help them when they cry. I cannot help them when they need me. All I can do is offer an ear, just to listen. Things will change. Be ready to listen to them call me. A lot in the beginning, a moderate amount in the middle, and potentially nonexistent in the end.

High school has made us close, but college might be the end of us. I hate to admit that, but it might be true. Who knows? We might beat the odds, we might be best friends forever with kids that we will force to marry each other. My point is that you might replace me and I secretly hate you for that, but you will be there for her, so I have to appreciate you.

When they cry, make them laugh. When they laugh, make them laugh more. When they mess up, give them some advice that sounds good. When they are moody, deal with them, please. I know they are a pain in the butt, but they are someone’s best friend- mine.

I hope you guys get along, I really do. This should be a year of thriving and success. You should work together to make it through this year. Totally go all out, take them to the football games and decorate your room like it is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Make more friends, be social, try hard in school.

They are unique, appreciate them for what they have to offer- even if it isn’t a lot. They might be awkward and uncomfortable, but if I can deal with it, you can too. You will have to learn to live with all of their weird quirks, but it is totally worth it. Get to know them and learn to love them.

Anyway, I am sure you will hear from me. I am sorry for my mini lecture, but this is the only way I know how to explain my thoughts. I hope your school year is great too, but just know they are my top priority. I can't help a whole lot, but if you are concerned, please call. I am here to help. We now have a common thread in our lives. I hope you enjoy them as much as I would have.

Sincerely,

Your roommate's best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
