A Letter To My Boyfriend's Mother
Heather Stephens

First, I just have to thank you for showing me such kindness. From the very first day I walked into your home you have shown me such love and warmth. You are such a wonderful, spiritual woman and I am so glad you all have welcomed me into the family the way you have. You've opened up your home to me and your heart as well. Secondly, thank you so very much for raising such a respectable, generous, and handsome young man. His heart bursts at the seams with love and compassion. I know he takes that after you ;) (and maybe his father some too) He treats every human with respect and he is such a hard worker. You've literally raised the love of my life. I am so blessed to have him. Rather you realize it or not, you have definitely helped me. Like that time I got something on my shirt and you had to use your mom powers to get whatever the stain was out. Or the fact that you have specifically made a room for me in your home that is just for me. You are always there to just jump in and try to help me in anyway you can. You are so kind to me. Thank you for that. With me being away from home and always staying here on campus, I found comfort in your home. Not to mention the fact that you and grandma are basically professional chefs. You all know your way around a kitchen, that's for sure! I have no family here so it's nice to have an inviting place to go Sunday after church. It's nice to have people here that love me. My college years have been tough and before your son I spent them alone. Finding you guys was such a blessing. You all have treated me like your own.

I have two favorite moments specifically that we've shared together. One was when I tried to throw you a mother's day party. You are always so encouraging when I make food. You could've probably hated everything I cook but you and your husband are always encouraging me and telling me I'm a great cook. Thanks... I really need that sometimes. My second favorite moment was when I got baptized and you all bought me my first ever bible. It was such a beautiful bible. It's still the only bible I use and my favorite gift I have ever received. Lastly, thank you for being such a positive influence in my life. I only know a couple influential women. You are a great mother and wife. You are truly the type of woman I aspire to be. You are crafty, sincere and wise beyond your years. You love God and are always telling me to seek Him first. Your love for God makes me appreciate you even more.

There are a million things I could thank you for, but I'll save that for another time. For now, thank you for being apart of my life and letting me be apart of yours. I can never repay for all of the hospitality you have shown me. I love, love, love you!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
