Let’s Talk About the New Star Wars Title
Star Wars fans like myself have started to speculate on the meaning for the latest installment in the franchise.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is an ominous title, which either means that any remaining Jedi who exist in the other Star Wars properties might have already died, but they could also be living in seclusion. This means that Ahsoka, Kanan, and Ezra are not going to make an appearance unless the title is a nod to the idea that Luke is the only Jedi left, but that that idea is one that is wrong.
Which is a nicer idea than assuming that the other Jedi we love are dead.
Whatever the reason, we know that they will never be seen on film. So this title means on of two things: this is going to heavily feature Luke Skywalker or that this movie is about Rey after training with Luke and that the mantle is being passed to her, which means Luke will die.
Only one those things sounds promising to me while the other sounds like a heartbreak waiting to happen.
We know that Luke is more than likely going to train Rey, and if he does not, then there were several wasted minutes of story in the “The Force Awakens. Now, the upsetting idea is that Luke dies after training and passing the mantle on to Rey.
Do I doubt that we will lose the beloved and original face? I do, because with loss of Han Solo and the eventual death of General Leia (because we know she is going to unfortunately die on screen with the untimely loss of Carrie Fisher), it would not make sense to kill off another hero of the original trilogy. Now, that is not to say that he may not die in the unnamed final part of the trilogy, but I am hoping he does not.
Also, it is a terrible misuse of Mark Hamill. So I think we are safe from him dying.
Now, we can discuss Kylo Ren, who by all accounts may receive a redemption arc similar to that of Vader’s in “Return of the Jedi” which would be poetic, but my amount of dislike for the character (who is an excellent character) makes me push that idea away, but unfortunately, it seems more likely that he will get one than not.
Another interesting plot line is the discovery of Rey’s parents, something that has been a discussion since the character was introduced. It was largely assumed that she would be the daughter of Leia and Han, given the resemblance to popular Star Wars Legends character, Jaina Solo. Now, if you want a dramatic and upsetting story, read the Legacy of the Force series where she has to kill her brother for falling down the same path as their grandfather. Kylo Ren even looks like Jacen, who is also the son the of Han and Leia.
What do you think the next installment holds? Let me know.
With the death of beloved Carrie Fisher, it is needless to say that whatever story they had planned before may not be the same story originally conceived when “The Force Awakens” was originally written.
