You can feel it; there's a slight chill in the air, the leaves are starting to fall and Halloween is haunting the halls of every store. The sweaters and boots and scarves come out as soon as it drops below 70 degrees, because everyone wants their favorite part of the year to arrive.
Pumpkin spice latte season (Alternatively known as "Fall").
There has been a persistent trend on the internet and in school/workplace conversations, and most of them start with "I wish" and end with "pumpkin spice." It's a thread of conversation that has been figuratively (and literally) beat to death by news outlets, youtubers, and basically anyone who can gather a brief audience during autumn. You may think I'm here to complain about pumpkin spice, the lattes, the cookies, the bread, the overall aroma of pumpkin that seems to float through the air during the fall season.
You would be wrong.
The number one most annoying thing about the fall is the enormous number of people who can't seem to get over themselves and admit that pumpkin spice is a delightful flavor that we are only privy to for a brief amount of time. The season of pumpkin was pioneered of course by pumpkin pie, but has been transformed into a culture that I'm always excited to be a part of when this time of year rolls around. The only negative is those who come along with it and will stop at nothing to spew opinions that no one is particularly interested in.
It has become a trend to mock teenage girls (and women) for most things they do, and our love for pumpkin spice lattes is not excluded from this (This is not to say only women drink pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin is for everyone and anyone who wished to feel joy during the fall). There is an obnoxious amount of hate for a flavor, and more often than not, pumpkin spice is thrust into a conversation not by a lover of pumpkin, but by someone who wants nothing more than to ridicule and bash anyone who could dare love to drink their coffee in any way but black.
It's become somewhat of a joke, at the expense of teenage girls of course. There is the ever-present need to explain yourself for liking a drink, one that is obviously popular enough for Starbucks to bring back year after year.
"Oh well, I'm not like one of the annoying girls that likes it I just really like pumpkin!"
"I mean, I don't get it a lot, only every once in a while"
"Dude, you're getting that?"
It is in this way that the topic of pumpkin spice has become annoying; not because of its popularity, but because those who don't enjoy it are so prone to attempt to convince others to believe their twisted narrative of pumpkin spice hate.
All I have to say to these pumpkin-spice-latte-haters is to find a new hobby. The trend of loving pumpkin spice wasn't annoying until you started complaining about it. Pumpkin is a staple fall spice, and you whining about it isn't going to make it go away. To all my pumpkin spice lovers out there, keep drinking those lattes if they make you happy. You only get to drink them once a year, so don't waste it.
