The 41-year-old actor is such an incredible actor that many are upset he did not receive an oscar, sooner. But, Leo finally got his Oscar Sunday, February 28 for his role in "The Revenant" after four previous unsuccessful nominations. He deserves so much more than one oscar, however.
He has been in the industry 25 years in the making, ever since he made his big-screen debut in Critters 3 back in 1991. If you think about it, DiCaprio should have gotten an oscar for his timeless roles in "The Titanic," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Aviator," "Blood Diamond," and "The Wolf Of Wall Street." We have seen DiCaprio play the teen romantic roles and the middle-age, intense survivor roles. He has succeeded for his versatile ability to play all parts.
DiCaprio received a standing ovation from the crowd. He thanked his “brother" Tom Hardy, as well as Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and even director Martin Scorsese. He also used his victory to talk about the growing issue of climate change.
"Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world...climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations but for all people. Let us not take our planet for granted," he concluded. "I do not take tonight for granted."
DiCaprio’s win was the third for "The Revenant," which also stole victories in the best cinematography category and best director for Iñárritu.
Backstage, DiCaprio talked about his passion for acting and his appreciation ”to have had parents that have allowed me to be a part of this industry, to take me on auditions every day after school and to tell stories like this has been my dream ever since I was 4 years old.”
Everyone has been rooting for you. Way to go, Leo.
