LeBron James continues to show love and to honor the city he so proudly loves. From the James’ Family Foundation to the partnering with the University of Akron, James continues to make a difference outside of basketball. If his skills didn’t make him one of the best, most influential basketball players of all time, his off the court deeds surely did.
James has been working with Akron public schools to open the "I Promise School" dedicated to aiding at-risk children who were in the same predicament he was growing up.
James grew up in a single-parent home raised by his mother, Gloria, who was helped by other families in raising her now-famous son. The school will open in the fall of 2018 but will mainly focus on kids in the third and fourth grades but they are hopefully by 2020 they will have expanded to serve kids in grades K-8.
"This school is so important to me because our vision is to create a place for the kids in Akron who need it most - those that could fall through the cracks if we don't do something," James said ."We've learned over the years what works and what motivates them, and now we can bring all of that together in one place along with the right resources and experts. If we get to them early enough, we can hopefully keep them on the right track to a bigger and brighter future for themselves and their families."
The school is an extension of an original program the LeBron James Family Foundation had in elementary-college called the I Promise Initiative. Started because studies have found that students by third grade, have already fallen behind their peers. The programs help aides and support them with the resources and availability needed to help keep them motivated.
James has previously partnered with the University of Akron to provide Foundation students (who meet a certain set of requirements and graduate from Akron Public Schools) with a tuition and fees scholarship to The University of Akron. Many of the children who are mentored in James' foundation live in Akron's inner city. They may come from single-parent households and face various social and economic barriers to learning.
From other NBA players like John Wall and Ben Simmons, James has been a mentor to them as well. He continues to stay out of trouble, says the right things and avoids things that can tarnish his name. That’s something you can’t say about many NBA players who get consumed by the large amounts of money they receive. LeBron James’ is looking to leave a legacy outside of basketball that’s bigger than his basketball legacy.
