"Although I'm still young, I fancy myself an old soul."

19 Things I Learned In 19 Years
Madeline McKissick

On Saturday, March 4, 2017 I turned nineteen years old. I still can't believe that I'm in college, let alone getting older, so my birthday caught me by surprise this year. Although I'm still young, I fancy myself old soul, and in my time on earth thus far, I've learned these valuable lessons about life.

1. Don't be afraid to be yourself.

You are the only version of you that this world will ever have. Embrace the quirks that make you different.

2. Be humble.

Give credit where credit is due, and let others boast for you.

3. Be grateful for everything you have.

You have so many blessings that others want badly. Don't take your family, your education, the roof over your head, or even your meals for granted.

4. Don't give up easily.

If you quit, you'll never know how much you could have accomplished.

5. Beauty comes from within.

A pretty face means nothing if you don't have a pretty heart. Kindness and happiness are the only cosmetics you need.

6. Everyone deserves kindness

Friends, family, teachers, and strangers each have a life as complex as your own. Even if you don't know the struggles that someone is going through, the least you can do is show them kindness.

7. Be optimistic instead of pessimistic.

Everyone has dreary days, but it helps to look for the rainbows instead of the storm clouds.

8.You're smarter than you think you are.

Don't let the intelligence of others intimidate you. Do your best and believe in your own abilities.

9. Don't worry.

My mom often tells me "Don't borrow trouble." Each moment you spend worrying about something is a moment that you'll never get back. Although if something is truly bothering you, get help or be proactive and do something about it.

10. Everything happens for a reason.

Both good and bad things are blessings in disguise. You might not see the good in a situation, but believe me, it's there.

11. Stand for something or you'll fall for anything.

This world will tempt you and shake your faith. Be ready to stand up for yourself and your beliefs

12. Life goes on.

If you make a mistake or don't get something you wanted, it's not the end of the world. You never know when something amazing is around the corner.

13. Remember to laugh.

Whether you're stressed, angry, or bummed out, laughter really is the best medicine.

14. Make every day count.

Each day is a gift and we're never promised tomorrow. Spend today well because you'll never get it back.

15. Not everyone will like you...

... but that's okay. The people who matter most to you will love you unconditionally

16. Family is forever.

Even though I'm in college, my family drove two hours to spend my birthday with me and we all had an amazing day together. Friends and sweethearts come and go, but your family will always love you and be there for you.

17. Follow your dreams.

You have only one life to live, so why not spend it doing what you're called to do?

18. Say "I love you."

These three words are powerful, and you never know when someone really needs to hear them.

19. A little smile goes a long way.

Smiles really are contagious, and smiling is the easiest way to spread happiness.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
