Guys, I've found the ultimate life hack.
And no, it's not planning your clothes the night before a big day or going on Sparknotes to quickly brush up on a book you didn't read.
It's learning to walk like a lacrosse boy.
Hear me out: Have you ever seen a boy who plays lacrosse not walk with a blinding amount of confidence? You don't have to see the name of the sport they play on their backpack to know when a lacrosse boy is walking towards you. They walk with their shoulders rolled back, chests puffed out, a slight smile on their face, and a bit of a swagger.
And yes, I spend time analyzing the walking patterns of lacrosse boys.
But there's scientific proof that a certain way of walking can alter the way you're perceived and the way you perceive yourself.
According to an article by Psychology Today, simply walking with your shoulders rolled back and thus your chest out can make a person think you're more confident and socially dominant. In fact, there's a ton of research out there that says you can determine a person's personality by different aspects about the way they walk such as their gait, their eye contact while walking, and even the way your feet are placed on the ground with each step.
Another article says when you walk with confidence, you'll begin to notice a change in how others are treating you. As a result, that will shift your mindset and make you believe you're confident even on days when you might not really be feeling it.
So why does this matter?
Imagine you're going into a job interview. You're probably not so comfortable in that situation, right? Walking with a false confidence could not only alter the way your potential employer sees you but also the way you see yourself.
This is similar to faking a huge smile for 20 seconds in order to make your brain think you're happy when you might not be. So, if you can trick yourself into having confidence and it's as easy as walking with your shoulders back and a smile on your face, why wouldn't you?
The next time you need an extra boost of confidence, throw your shoulders back, stand up straight, fake a bit of a smile, and walk with an even and measured gait. Who knows what you'll be capable of when you walk like a lacrosse player?
