There are many reasons why learning another language is a good idea. For example, it can set you apart from others when applying for jobs, or maybe you want to travel and need to be able to communicate. In addition to these reasons, an article in The New York Times says that being bilingual can actually make you smarter.
So why does it make you smarter? Although this article mostly focuses on those who grow up being bilingual, it also states that the effects are most likely applicable to those who learn a second language later in life. In addition to making you more efficient at completing detailed tasks, according to a study conducted by Tamar Gollan, a neuropsychologist, bilinguals are more resistant to dementia; "the higher degree of bilingualism, the later the age of onset."
Also, like I mentioned above, knowing another language can provide you with a ton of job opportunities. With all of the changes in the world, companies are constantly looking for employees that are able to get them to the next level and open up doors for them in new places. Do you want to travel? Why not learn another language and get paid to travel!
Furthermore, studying another language means learning about new cultures. For me, personally, this is the best part about all of my years studying Spanish. It's really interesting to learn about different traditions, such as parades and festivals, and how different cultures celebrate holidays. It really opens your eyes to how wonderfully diverse the world really is.
So why not add that Spanish, French, or maybe even Chinese class to your schedule? A little extra time invested in a language will provide you a million benefits in your future!
