Why The Bathroom Laws Aren't About Bathrooms

Why we should realize that the war on bathrooms is about so much more than a toilet.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard of the law against letting transgender people use the bathroom for the sex that is not on their birth certificate (House Bill Two). Yesterday, I read an article about how people shouldn't be arguing/getting upset about where people use the restroom (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/transgender-bat...). People couldn't care less about where people relieve themselves, but this is a fight on civil rights and the misunderstanding of someone that is different than yourself. These people are being told that they are not allowed to go to the bathroom for the gender that they identify with 24/7. Now some of you may say, "Well Sara if they look like they're a boy/girl, then why don't they just use the bathroom for the gender that they look like? It's not like a bathroom attendant is going to ask to see a birth certificate." Well, that's true, but it's not the point. YouTuber Philip DeFranco phrased it so perfectly by saying that if people use the restroom for the gender that isn't on their birth certificate they will be forced to break the law every time they use the restroom (https://www.youtube.com/user/sxephil). We shouldn't make people have to break the law to do something as simple as using the bathroom These are laws against people relieving themselves; they are about keeping trans people from finally being treated people. We are told as children to celebrate our differences, so why are we not celebrating these differences?

Videos and articles made by people who are pro House Bill Two like to use the excuse that if people are allowed to use either bathroom, then some will use that as a way to attack women and children. First off, attacking someone is illegal. Second, you are assuming that a sign on the wall is acting as a forcefield on the door, and people who would do something as disgusting and violent as attacking someone will be stopped just because it is the other gender's bathroom.

This adorable young lady is Corey Maison. She is a 14 year old girl who is so many amazing things. One of those things is being an inspiration to transgender youth. With House Bill Two in action, Corey would be forced to use the mens restroom in states like North Carolina. People are trying to say that children are going to be attacked, but what makes you think that little girls like Corey won't be attacked as well if you're forcing her to use the bathroom of a gender that is not her own?

With that law, these two male models would be forced to use a women's restroom. They are saying that it may cause embarrassment if they don't put House Bill Two into action, yet they are not taking into account how embarrassing it must feel for Allex and Laith to use the women's restroom.

Why don't we stop trying to make this life as comfortable as possible for us and start realizing that all around us the world is changing for the better? People are going to be different, and while you might not completely understand what they are going through, we should understand that we are all humans just trying to get get by. We should help each other to make this rollercoaster of life the best it can be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
