There’s always a weird lull between Christmas and New Year’s. Those few days where you’re still taking a break from school/work/whatever, but not really celebrating or anticipating anything. That’s when this article was written. Christmas came and went with its usual fanfare, but New Year’s Eve and Day don’t get as much love. Sure, they’re still holidays and we’ll celebrate them, but as far as their spot on the “important” holidays go, they are pretty low. It’s a new year, the Earth made another rotation around the sun, big whoop.
Of course, there are those who are excited with the prospect of a new year; given all the crazy stuff that’s happened in 2016, I don’t blame them for wanting to move on. “New year, new me” is the choice phrase of many of these individuals. Though to their credit, it does hold some weight. A new year means a new start to a lot of people, and maybe appropriately so depending on how the last year went. Perhaps it was terrible, perhaps it was great. But sometimes it’s nice to start back at square-one, be back at the start of the level so you can see how much you’ve progressed and how much you’ve grown.
But what’s the point of my ramblings? I suppose that there isn’t one. But there is a point in us reminiscing about the past twelve months. It’s to put things into perspective and really appreciate the time that we have given to us. All of us have things that we would have changed to done differently, but there are lots of things that we would have kept the same too. Maybe it was the amount you exercised this year, how many calories you ate, what things you bought, or who you voted for. Whether you would change those things or not, it’s not really my place to say but yours to reflect on.
2016 has most certainly been an interesting year for all of us. Maybe you think this was one of the worst years in recent memory with all the violence and corruption blaring on seemingly every news screen every other week. Perhaps you think that it was a great year with all the charity work and scientific progress that has been made you see on your Facebook feed every day. Whatever you think, that’s your opinion and you are most certainly entitled to it.
But whatever your thoughts on 2016, it’s coming to a close. You may have made a New Year’s resolution to relax/work more, learn a new language, or experiment with some new fashion styles. Whatever it is, I think one we can all agree on is to be better. To improve on what was before for what’s coming. Despite our differences, I believe that’s something we can all get behind.
