Believe it or not, gender inequality in the workplace is something that definitely still exists in 2016. Although women have had more freedom than ever, we are still treated unfairly in comparison to men. The worst part is that women are feeding into this by treating each other as competition rather than colleagues.
Workplace culture has developed into a war zone for women. Constantly, women battle head to head in order to get the next promotion in the office. With this never-ending competition in the workplace comes gossip, nasty side-glares, and fake smiles in the coffee lounge.
It's time for this poisonous work environment to end. Ladies, in a time where we are still working towards having equal rights with men, we need to unify rather than retaliate against one another. Women have been more able to get a better education and solid career path in modern times than in any other era of society, yet we are still at such a disadvantage. We still make only 79 cents in comparison to every dollar a male coworker earns in the same position. Isn't it time that we focused our anger on the gender inequality we're forced to go through instead of taking it out on each other?
The point is that women do not need to be enemies in their workplace to achieve their personal goals. Instead of being jealous of one's accomplishments, try to feel proud and happy for them. Even if you're not the woman getting the next manager position, isn't it already a tremendous feat for any woman to get the job?
Ladies, let's start focusing our competition on our male counterparts. So far, women only make up a minority in our nation's top career paths. Only a mere 33 percent of lawyers are women, and 27 percent of chief executives are female. The strong hold men have on top-earning job positions needs to be broken down. By looking at other women as competitors rather than allies, we are only feeding the social hierarchy established by men even further.
We live in a world where we have the chance to change history and elect a female president, yet we still aren't given a paycheck equal to that of our male coworkers solely because they have penises and we don't.
That is a perfect example of unfair treatment, and we must be fighting together to stop this discrimination. Women work just as hard as men do, and should be paid just as much as men do. Fighting with each other will get us nowhere, but fighting together will open so many doors for us and our future daughters.
Many notable women are now realizing this flawed workplace value and are standing up for change. Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, has created a nonprofit organization and online community called Lean In in order to spread her message of equality in the workplace.
Many of the media's most powerful women, such as Emma Watson, Lena Dunham, and Fox news reporter Megyn Kelly, have joined Sandberg's movement to bond females across the country in the workplace. You can watch the PSA video below:
So, ladies, try to lend a hand to your fellow females at your job. Congratulate each other on their success instead of getting jealous. By treating one another as equals, we will be able to show men the true power and intelligence that women contain.
