I am not the typical sorority girl you think of. Yes, a sorority can be girly and frilly but when it comes down to it I joined an organization. That is it; it doesn't make me dumb or a follower, or a person who isn't comfortable to be independent, I simply am just part of an organization. Everyone has their reasons but being labeled as less of a person is simply unacceptable.
I have only been a part of a sorority for a short amount of time but boy do I have a mouthful for you. My time as being in a sorority has had its pros and cons and will only continue to have them but the pros far outweigh the cons. The one thing that has stuck out to me was being labeled, and I am not just being sensitive. I knew joining a sorority would have its ups and downs but not in a way I thought to expect. What really gets my gears going is when I'm degraded because I wear my Greek letters. What has really hit it home is how I've heard my friends or people I am close to talking about members of a sorority. It is honestly disheartening.
To all of my friends who have down graded people due to being part of a Greek organization, I just have a few words for you: shame on you. This also goes for the people out in the world who don't know me or any other sorority girl but choose to think less of a person due to being a part of an organization.
10 things to keep in mind the next time you see someone talk about their sorority or you find out they are a part of one...
1. They DO NOT have to like the color pink.
2. They DO NOT have to love glitter.
3. They have self-respect; so please stop saying they don't.
4. They are confident and didn't join because they aren't. (This one is my favorite.)
5. They are not all rich. (shocker right?)
6. They aren't dumb.
7. They only went through rush because they wanted to party. Again, wrong.
8. If you think they all talk like valley girls; you are wrong (OMG, like seriously?!)
9. No, they DO NOT only date guys in fraternities.
10. They are normal human beings who happen to be a part of an organization.
