Kyven has been pumping out quality electronic dance music for many years now. The group consists of NYC-based songwriters Kyle Ewalt and Steven Shewbrooks. Their synth-pop sound strikes that right balance between commercial quality and progressive production. Think groups like New Order, Pet Shop Boys and ‘90s era’ Depeche Mode. Kyven’s “Laser Light” release certainly delivers in that regard.
On the the title track, Ewalt confidently belts out power vocals like “get ready here we go” over Shewbrooks’ anthemic electro-pop production. “Shine” is classic Kyven as Ewalt’s vocal bravado perfectly glides in stride with Shewbrooks’ precise synth-pop rhythms. The song beams with uplifting optimism while Ewalt sincerely sings “cause you know that you’ll be fine...shine...keeping your eyes on that light at the end...” powered by Shewbrooks’ pop house goodness. Focused on the emotional rollercoaster ride of breaking up, the duo brings on more of their electronica magic when “Keep Getting Over You” boasts its lush symphonic sounds and epic ELO-esque feel complemented by biting lyrics to boot. “Running Red” is a fast-paced straight-up techno jam emitting sonic effects that sound like they awesomely came right from an 80s video arcade game.
Kyven’s sophisticated brand of electronic dance music delivers with laser precision. And they continue to shine a light into what electronica can be. “Laser Light” is indeed a perfect title for the release.
