As Kylie Jenner is undeniably one of the most popularized icons within almost every social media outlet, it’s hard to ignore the pop culture footprint the Kardashians/Jenners have strategically created. Most people don’t even know why, but these stars always seem to find their way into the limelight. At this point, this is just how it has always been, and no one really questions it.
While I think the domino effect of publicity began with Kim Kardashian’s sex tape leakage in 2007, Kris Jenner’s marriage to Bruce (Now Caitlyn Jenner), is what brought the Jenner daughters into the public eye. Since their initial moments of fame, they sure haven’t lost the attention of the public, not for too long of course.
Kylie Jenner’s under-the-radar pregnancy with rap star Travis Scott was kept a secret from the public until an official announcement was made on February 4th, three days after she had given birth to her daughter, Stormi. Originally, fans and spectators everywhere were aching for some sort of clue about Kylie’s pregnancy (which at the time was not public information), so the public stirred up a rumor that the baby was going to be named “Mariposa” (the Spanish term for “butterfly”) after her father’s hit song “Butterfly Effect.” The song released around the start of Kylie’s pregnancy.
As time goes on, traditions and societal norms are changing, whether we like it or not. The way the public has generally reacted to this spectacle is somewhat atypical, provided that Kylie is on the younger side of most day-to-day mothers. To a more personal standpoint, Kylie is just shy of two years older than me. In my life up to this point, I have never dreamed nor even wanted to have a child within the next two or even next five years of my life. While this statement isn’t meant to be malicious or insulting towards Kylie’s choice, I truly view childbirth as an activity typically associated with adulthood as it comes with an inexplicable amount of responsibility.
Having said that, I’m aware that once any person turns 18 years old they are legally considered an adult, despite the lingering immaturity. No 18-year-old really has any idea what they’re doing (unless they’re one of the most famous people in the world and presumably has most of their life planned for them), and usually spends the next few years figuring that out. As I am obviously just another clueless teenager in the melting pot of adolescence, Kylie’s announcement of her pregnancy in my eyes was startling and ultimately, frightening as well. I am nowhere near feeling comfortable with being associated under the category of “adult.”
While I’m getting there, I truly don’t feel comfortable that someone so close to my age has done something I never thought I would associate with my number of years I’ve spent on this earth.
Although kylie is a pop culture icon and this creates a great amount of exception from the typical norms of our present day society, Kylie’s event (and her platform in our world) has the potential to create a movement, or a new norm, similar to the way Caitlyn Jenner’s transition has arguably changed the view that Americans have on the LGBTQ community. Having said that, is pregnancy and childbirth occurring at this young age on the road to becoming a new norm? If this is the case, depending upon how much traction this potential normality gains, benchmarks of typical life occurrences are going to transition greatly.
