If we're friends, then you know these two very important facts about me: I absolutely love makeup, and I am low-key fascinated with Kylie Jenner.
You can imagine how excited I was when the synthesis of these two things occurred.
Kylie Jenner's Lip Kit has pretty much monopolized the discussion of makeup products since it came out a few months ago. Before I bought it, I read through countless reviews to make sure that my $40 was going to be properly invested. My curiosity got the best of me, and after some refreshing at just the right time, I scored and purchased the shade Dolce K.
Before I get to the real point, let me start with something positive.
Each kit comes with a lip liner and a liquid lipstick. As for the lip liner, I think it's great. It's really soft and goes on smooth, which is a nice contrast because a lot of lip liners I've used before tend to be kind of dry. It's easy to sharpen and precise, and it's honestly my favorite liner in my bag.
The liquid lipstick, though, was more than disappointing. When I initially opened it, I was stoked because it smelled like cupcakes, which to me, seemed like a promise that good things were ahead. And then I applied it. It went on smooth and even; the formula was a good consistency.
All was great until my lips turned into a vast, desert wasteland. I've never had any lip product dry out my lips like that. I was really shocked because in the reviews I've seen, everyone has said that it feels like there's nothing even on. It felt like it dried in a layer rather than blending with my lips.
I went with it for a little bit because I loved the color. I heard it stayed on very well, and based on the way it felt like paint over my lips, I figured it wasn't going anywhere. It had good reviews for durability, so I wasn't giving up yet.
I checked on it about 45 minutes later and alas, my biggest pet peeve as a makeup lover reared its ugly head. The entire middle section of my lips had completely come off, but the outer part was still completely intact. The contrast was insane, and it looked absolutely terrible.
So then comes the removal. I used a regular makeup remover and the stuff came crumbling off. Remember in elementary school when you'd put glue on your hands and rub them together to peel it off? (OK, we all did it.) It was like that. It made such a mess and required a ton of scrubbing.
All of that said, my liquid lipstick has been used maybe four times max, and only because the color is so unique. I have been avoiding using this product as much as possible because it is such a hassle.
The bottom line to my makeup-loving friends is: save your money. There are other products that won't cost you an arm and a leg that will do the job ten times better. I suggest the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain ($14) or the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($20). These both knock Kylie Jenner out of the park. (According to Jeffree Star, the Kylie lip glosses aren't great either.)
Thanks for trying to help us out, Kylie, but a cheap product in $40 packaging won't do the same trick as all of those lip injections.
