If you had told me freshman year that high school would be the end to some of my friendships, then I would have called you crazy. You would have been right though.
Looking back, I guess the signs were there in freshman year, I was just too naïve to see them. When you're fifteen, you think that your friends will have your back through the thick and thins of high school. Sometimes that is true, but as every teenager eventually finds out, some friendships are meant to teach you a lesson.
Those are the types of friendships you need to have, however. They teach you that although people may knock you down, there will be people to help pick you up. Those are your forevers.
When I was younger, I always thought I'd have a friendship that was inseparable. I got that friend in the second grade, and God bless her for being a trustworthy person. There were, however, those friendships that came and went. Those that ended due to one person having to move away and a loss of contact between us, and those that were just, for a lack of a better word, toxic. It only took until high school to realize just how toxic they were.
High school made me realize who my true friends are, and while I got burned in the process, I'm happy with the results. While some people might try to tear you down, you realize that those stay around to help you are the ones that aren't worth losing. Yeah, you might be disappointed in the person you thought was your friend, but please don't waste time thinking about if you could have fixed it, because it wasn't your fault. So what you lost a "friend." Was that person really your friend in the first place? Was there ever a good thing that person did for you that made you think their friendship was worth it? Or was this the same person who would gossip behind your back?
Let me tell you one thing - if anyone is treating you less than how you deserve to be treated, then walk away from the relationship. If its a boyfriend/girlfriend/best "friend", I don't care; walk away. Don't let people walk all over you. You are a human being, not a pile of trash; so don't stay in relationships or friendships that make you feel that way. Nobody deserves that.
At some point, you need to take a step back and evaluate if you're the only one caring. If that's true, then walk away. You're as good as the people around you; so surround yourself with the type people you want to become. Doing this will not only improve your self-esteem but your well being.
For those of you that feel completely alone right now, it's okay. We all do. That's the suck-y part of growing up. It gets better, trust me.
