The Few, The Proud, The Struggle Bus

For those Rocks

Man oh man, we all know one of them. In some cases, we are one of them. It's hard to try and learn how to swim in one hour a week for 6 weeks, so most future Fishes are born in the Remedial Swim Program.

Those who have been through this crucible that separates those who can and cannot (and for some still in), it can be a grind sometimes (read most of the time), but in the end, when you finally manage to get that chlorine taste outta ya mouth, it's a hard-won time of enjoyment. Despite that, here are some emotions I've experienced as an AquaRock.

1. The Legitimately Can't Swim

Coach: "Alright guys, start with a down and back warm up."

Mid: "Coach, I can't swim...."

Coach:

2. Helpful Advice

"Just breathe in and you'll float."

3. Too early for this Swim

0600, winter, and cold LEJEERRRNE Pool.

4. How You Feel After Morning Swim

5. Overload

"You wanna swim on your side, and pull with one arm, keep kicking, breathe on one side or both, press your chest down, keep your hips up, don't forget to breathe, exhale in the water, don't freak out, look down not forward, keep kicking....."

6. "This is more important that whatever you got during Sports Period."

7. "Congrats...."

Mid: "Did I make it?"

Coach: "No, but you got faster by 3 seconds."

8. Easy Class

"Alright guys, this will be short, just go hard for 400m and then you can leave."

9. Passing the Test Accidentally

10. "Forgetting" To Go to Remedial Swim

11. Qualifying as a Fish

When you finally get out of Remedials:

11. And When You Tell Your Friends

The Highs and Lows of an AquaRock are many, but usually, they are the 10m Jump and the Bottom of the Pool during the 50 Underwater. I've been through that grind, and some of my guys and gals are still on it. Maybe it is just a requirement for graduating, but damn does it eat away at your will to try.

And yet, to be part of this place, I'd do it all over again.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
