"You change the world when you change your mind" - Kinky Boots
I've been lucky enough to see Kinky Boots 3 times! The show is still running in the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Kinky Boots was originally a movie that was inspired by true events. The musical is about Charlie, the son of Mr.Price; the owner of a shoe company. Charlie grew up in his small town in Northampton. Charlie seemingly escapes the responsibility of taking over the factory when he moves with his fiance to London. Charlie soon gets news that his father has passed away, and the factory that he was left is going under. One night Charlie tries to stop two muggers from bothering a woman. This woman is actually the fabulous drag queen, Lola. Lola complains to Charlie about how the kinky boots she loves do not support the weight of a full grown man. Charlie develops an idea with the help of Lauren, a quirky but cute worker at the factory. The company saving idea is to make heels for drag queens that will support their weight! As Charlie and Lola spend more time together they realize they have more in common than they thought. Both Charlie and Lola have found it extremely challenging to live up to their fathers expectations. Charlie and his fiance call off the wedding when he refuses to sell the factory. Charlie still refuses to sell even when he finds out his father was planning on selling the company rather than believing in him. Lauren helps Charlie and is now an executive at Price and Son! Lauren admits to falling for Charlie. Lola teaches the more masculine men at the factory what it really takes to be a man - accepting someone for who they are. Charlie, under all his stress, lashes out at Lola and is now afraid Lola and the other queens will not be at the big fashion show that could save the company. Of course Lola comes back and in their great success Lola and Charlie come to terms with their relationships with their father's, and Lauren and Charlie end up together.
This show is perfect for all audiences! The music by Cyndi Lauper is undeniably catchy, and makes everyone want to dance. Toderick Hall has done an amazing job. He has a firm grasp on his character, and had very specific psychological gestures for Lola. He brought excitement every time he came on stage. The costumes from the show were jaw dropping! From the skin tight sequined dresses to the thigh-high red boots, it kept the audience engaged and cheering every time a queen got on stage. The show itself manages to present a seemingly cheesy theme as something much more real and relatable to our society right now. I would recommend seeing this show to anyone!
