I drove a bug from the time I was learning to drive until I was graduated and in college. And then one day it began to break down and was no longer safe for me to drive to destinations further than thirty minutes away. My family and I went searching for a fairly new used car and finally settled on a Kia Spectra. And the rest has been history (I really love my Kia). So when I saw that Kia had partnered with Melissa McCarthy (Sookie forever!), I couldn't wait until Super Bowl Sunday to see it. And boy did it live up to my expectations.
I know this sounds like an ad for Kia (and Melissa McCarthy in a way), but for real this was one of the best Super Bowl ads I have ever seen. And trust me, the Super Bowl ads are just as important as the food on Super Bowl Sunday in my house. Hear me out on this one.
First of all, if you haven't watched the advertisement yet, you can watch it here. The general gist of the ad is to encourage viewers to go green with their cars and consider purchasing a Kia Niro. They accomplish this by putting Melissa McCarthy in various situations in which she needs to "save the world."
It begins with her saving the whales because she "loves whales!" And continues to various other predicaments that ultimately end in Melissa McCarthy sacrificing herself for the environment. Upon watching the advertisement, I got a cartoony vibe--which I am never opposed to. It takes the viewer back to their childhood while still talking about relevant problems in today's society.
Kia successfully uses humor and Melissa McCarthy to subtly show that they do believe something needs to be done to slow down things such as climate change and the carbon footprint we as humans are leaving on this Earth. This seems to be the more prevalent message rather than them wanting you to buy their car (which of course is always the goal with advertisements). I believe this because they focus much of their time in the commercial on Melissa and her adventures to save the whales, trees, or rhinos rather than on promoting their car. The promotion of the Kia Niro is done tastefully through Melissa driving it to and from various saving acts. And in a way that puts the problems of the Earth first rather than their car.
This commercial has just the right amount of humor, activism, and promotion. If anyone were to watch it I'm sure they would be amused--I even laughed out loud (something I have never done in regards to a commercial before). All in all, I applaud Kia for what they have done with this commercial and can't wait to see what comes next.
