Welcome to College: a world where people lose themselves in the mystifying atmosphere of everything the college experience has to offer. It’s not that difficult to allow this to happen as a result of being away from home, surrounded by different people from different walks of life, new social interactions that are bound to happen every weekend… starting Thursday night, of course. How does one even balance all this and still stay true to who they really are spiritually?
#1: Family.
Keep in contact with your family, after all they are the ones who will be your number one support system while in college no matter what organizations you're involved in, even if those come as a close second.
#2: Be A Light Amongst Others
The World obviously isn't some perfect little bubble that we live in, but you have the opportunity to be an inspiration in other's lives, and I'm not saying go out and start shoving the gospel down people's throats, but simply be the one anyone can go to, be a light of Hope.
#3: Make Time For It
College often calls for demanding and busy schedules so you are ultimately going to have to decide how you are going to make your spiritual commitment work for you. We seem to all have time to hit up the bar on the weekends, it's just as easy to hit up the morning service on Sunday.
#4: Be Tempted-Not
You can have an amazing time in college without being influenced by others. People will respect your choices and if they don't then that doesn't reflect on you at all more than it reflects on them.
#5: Prioritize
College is simply about prioritization, first and foremost you are there to get an education, but who is going to be your spiritual guide on test day, bid day and so forth, what is going to matter the most in your life to see that you succeed?
#6: Don't let the Opinions of others drown out your own inner voice
You may very well possibly hear people deny, criticize and belittle your faith directly and/or indirectly with so many different kinds of organization's the modern campus has to offer. Remember that their opinions do not have to any impact at all on what you believe.
#7: Motivation
Is the determination of being a good Christian , Jew, Muslim etc. really going to be justifying motivation factor? Perhaps but when all else fails find what really keeps you going whether its a devotional or the support of others.
#8. Find your place of Worship
Finding a place of worship is going to give you a solid foundation in your collegiate community but if you can't it's not the end of the world. After all Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you a car.
#9: Stand Up and Apart From the Crowd
Always be humble in your faith and remember that by no means necessary are you better than anyone else however Speak what you feel should be spoken (with courtesy of others of course) and make actions based on your inner spiritual judgement even if they go against what society believes is socially unacceptable.
#10: Friends:
No matter what you do while in college the number one group who will hold you accountable for what you believe are those enjoying the collegiate roller coaster with you: Friends. They will be there to lift you up and keep you the best person they know who you are, and no true friends are ever going to want to change you. Even if they don't believe the same as you we are all still people going through life with our own personal moral convictions.
