One time I had an Uber driver who asked me, “If money wasn’t a factor, what would you do for the rest of your life?” First of all, I really appreciated the question because no one really asked me that before, money does matter. Not that I’m not pursuing my dreams, but money is something to consider when you are trying to decide how to proceed with your life. I wish I could change my answer because now that I have thought about it, being a food critic would be so fun! I try to be an open person and I love being adventurous and trying new things. That's why when one of my friends wanted to try all of the frozen yogurt flavors at Cherry Berry, I couldn’t say no. So here is my amateur take at being a critic of fro-yo.
A favorite flavor of frozen yogurt is something that once you find you don’t want to give up. Finding the perfect combination of a flavor and toppings is something that becomes a “go-to”. I have always known my favorite flavors and it is a little freaky that I have developed preferences with frozen yogurt shops at home and at school. I think I am this way because when I was younger I didn't get that many choices. Frozen yogurt wasn’t big and you just picked one flavor of ice cream (no hate to ice cream, either). The freedom of frozen yogurt lies in your hands, but here are a few things to note about Cherry Berry's most regular flavors.
NSA Skinny Vanilly
The most basic yogurt flavor of vanilla is challenged in the world of frozen yogurt. Since the trend of fro-yo began, vanilla tasted exactly like what you would find in a crate of Dannon or Yoplait, actual yogurt which always bothered me. If I wanted vanilla yogurt I would just buy some but, in my mind, the notion of frozen yogurt should seem more like fun ice cream flavors. However, the flavor NSA Skinny Vanilly tastes like a carton of your favorite classic vanilla in soft server form: flavorful and classic and paired well with most toppings. That was the biggest surprise, but an inspiration to try as many classic flavors as we could.
Pecan Praline
Pecans do not sound like something that would make a good flavor, but more like a pie, you would have at your grandmother's house. Don’t hesitate, once we tried it there was only one comparison… The butterscotch DumDum, one of my personal favorites. It is one of the best flavors for the lollipop and Pecan Praline ranks right up there with it.
Toasted Marshmallow
Trust me we really tried, actually tried it like four times, but couldn’t pin our finger on it. It was sweet, but the taste was a kind of bland sweet taste. Sorry for the disappointment, also didn’t taste much like a marshmallow.
Banana
Bananas have a very distinct taste and the flavor of frozen yogurt tastes like a banana Laffy Taffy for a few seconds, which is amazing. However, the aftertaste from this flavor is a little odd. I would definitely suggest not to eat it plain, but mess around with the toppings if you are as crazy about bananas as Gwen Stefani.
Sea Salt Caramel
Tastes like buttered popcorn, but it's cold. It doesn't sound good, but it is still sweet and you don’t feel sick after eating it. Highly suggest.
Cookie Madness
By the picture on the sign you are expecting it to taste like Oreos galore. Somehow I was more disappointed than I should have been: It really tasted like off-brand Oreos which is disappointing, but not the worst thing.
Green Apple
I always love the fruit flavors because they either taste super artificial or they remind you of some kind of candy. This was a combination of a green jolly rancher and green apple schnapps. It was refreshing and I would definitely have it with gummy bears again.
Watermelon
For fruit flavors, I loved the watermelon! It tasted like Italian ice and bubble gum. It made me feel like I was seven years old and the ice cream truck came around on a hot summer day.
Dutch Chocolate/White Chocolate
It is the best way to make the Cherry Berry classic “swirl” or as close as you will get to it. The chocolate is very rich, like a layer cake you would get for your birthday, and the white chocolate is very light and refreshing. If you are going for a classic less fro-yo approach, then it is definitely a good choice for you.
Strawberry
I am so biased because Strawberry fro-yo is my favorite! It tastes like pure strawberry ice cream in soft serve form and in my book, it is everything it should be. I always pair it with brownie bites, very random, but there's a first time for everything.
Cake Batter
The flavor that you can find at almost every fro-yo place is cake batter. It is always a good idea, tastes like vanilla cake with a light buttercream frosting and any topping you put would go because it is like a base, any flavor cake you want.
There were some seasonal flavors that we didn’t get to try but going outside the box the best choice I could have made. So grab a sample cup and try the caramel corn, caramel apple, and apple pie. Even if that's not the case it is actually so fun to go through all the flavors with a friend so don’t worry about being “that person” (the obnoxious one) because they offer the sample cups, so why not?!
