Kanye West has done it again with his wonderfully artistic approach to his music and his reputation! As someone who has had enough of his so-called artistic genius, I am beyond impressed with how far West is willing to go to achieve the highest level of idiot. West debuted the music video for his song "Famous" ft. Rihanna, on the music streaming site Tidal on Friday, June 24, and received tons of media attention for it. Why? Oh, it might have something to do with the fact that the whole music video is basically just shots of naked celebs and political figures all lying in a giant bed with Kanye and his wife, Kim Kardashian. The other celebs featured are Taylor Swift, Amber Rose, Donald Trump, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Bill Cosby, Ray J, George W. Bush, Anna Wintour, and Caitlyn Jenner, all of which have either been highly prominent in the news as of late or their stories have affected his life in some way.
For those of you who don't know, the song "Famous" first gained media attention because of this line: "I feel me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that b---- famous." While both West and his wife say that Swift gave them permission to use the line, Swift and her associates have told the media repeatedly that she did not give them permission. And honestly, it is kind of hard to believe that someone like Taylor Swift would be OK with such an offensive lyric.
This line was the first that I had heard of "Famous," and already I was livid. Then Kanye dropped his music video, depicting a naked Swift right next to West and his wife. Swift has yet to make a statement, but sources say that she is pretty angry about it. As she should be.
So not only does the video feature two rapists, but it also features two women who have been repeatedly harassed and ridiculed by West. Amber Rose, who has experienced many an insult from West, is depicted in the video next to Ray J and Caitlyn Jenner, as if he hasn't harassed her enough. Depicted both Swift and Rose is not only multiple steps too far, but it is also a testament as to how selfish, immature and disgusting West is willing to be in order to remain in the spotlight.
Onward with the ever growing list of people who should be, and probably will be, very angry with Kanye West. Rihanna was depicted in the music video right next to Chris Brown. It's doubtful that Rihanna gave permission for this. To depict a victim lying in bed naked with their abuser is not only offensive, but potentially traumatizing for the victim. Brown has made a statement via Twitter, saying, "Why I gotta have the butt/crack showing WAX figure?" He was the first and so far only celeb to personally make a statement. West obviously did not think of anyone else but himself and his wife while making this music video.
Another aspect about the video that is questionable is that the men have all of their nether areas covered, while the women's breasts are shown. Is this a statement about how women's breasts should not be censored? Is West joining the "Free the Nipple" campaign? Doubtful, but one can hope that there is at least one redeeming aspect in this music video.
While Kanye will most likely be receiving tons of backlash, it is unlikely that he will be seeing any legal backlash. If a celeb were to take legal action against him, they would also likely have to take action against every depiction of their likeness used without their permission. That would take a while, especially if your last name is Trump. So while West basks in his temporary glory, Trump and the others will be planning their revenge. And if Taylor Swift has any say in it, things are about to get messy.
