Does Justin Timberlake's newest lead single, "Filthy," feel like a curveball to anyone else? It does to me. But... I think that is because we have grown to expect a certain sound out of JT. And that may be exactly where we went wrong.
Yeah, any JT fans feel like we can be good at guessing what his music will sound like because we've done pretty well with guessing how the other three albums — yes you read that right, this is only the fourth album post *NSYNC years — came out.
It makes sense that we may have felt we could at least SOMEWHAT expect what it would sound like since JT himself said that this album is "more so than any other album I've written, inspired by where I'm from." Because any fan knows that where he is from is MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. Not saying it was expected to be a country album, but maybe R&B mixed with a country like twang.
We get it JT... no more "Rock Your Body" or bringing "Sexy Back."
You're in your mid-30's. We'll accept it (even if we don't want to).
What we got was not what we are used to, nor was it that country/R&B mixture we may have expected. Maybe we will with the album, but with this single... what we got was an electro-funk dance song. The song definitely does not sound like everything else playing in the pop genre lately.
Some may even say that it is "trying a bit too hard" to be more in tune with today's music. Although it does have some weird lyrics and tics within the song, we can still hear the "R&B futurist" that he started out as when he first went solo.
Now.. do I think Filthy is a good song? Honestly, it's different... but catchy. Give it a couple plays. There may be a reason why he did his first track to the album in this way.
But what does this mean for the rest of his album?
Will it sound like this song?
Will it change up?
I have NO idea. I wish I did. But all I do know is Justin is prepared to take on the title as the "Man of the Woods" and I can't wait to hear what he's going to give us now. Stay Tuned.
