Aren't we all a little old to be rude? Since we were toddlers, our parents and teachers have been teaching us the Golden Rule and basic manners. I'm sorry if this comes off like a rant, but after witnessing how people treat waiters, security guards, and info desk workers (like me) this weekend, I think we all need a refresher.
Okay yes, it's been a really stressful few weeks for everyone. Finals, high temperatures, move out, graduation, dealing with family - not easy stuff. However, that DOES NOT give any of us the right to be nasty to the people who have to deal with hundreds of stressed out people, all while being stressed out themselves. In fact, nothing ever gives anyone the right to be rude for any reason. Just don't do it.
For example, if a security guard tells you that you need ID to enter a building. Don't freak out at them. It's their job to protect people and to enforce the rules - including requiring people to show ID.
If an info desk worker tells you there are no bathrooms in a building, don't scream at them. They probably sympathize with your call from nature, but they also know that if they break the rules, they will be fired. So please, just take their advice, and go to the building they recommend.
Or, if service is taking a long time because one person is trying to help many people at once, please be patient. They are probably stressed out and going as fast as they can.
What to do if you feel the urge to be rude:
1) Take a breath.
2) Imagine being in their shoes; how would you feel?
3) Evaluate yourself - why are you feeling this urge? Do you need food? Water?
4) Smile and don't say anything.
And in the end, always treat others how you want to be treated. You're a real adult now, act like one.
